“Originally a Wagner & Schmidt type first cast around 1905, and formerly known as Stanley.” [Jaspert] Cast by typefoundry Ludwig Wagner as Titanic (1920) [Reichardt] and Titan (1927) [Jaspert]. Later known as Titantypo (Johannes Wagner, 1966). Karl Brendler in Vienna and the Amsterdam Type Foundry sold their versions as Herkules or Hercules, and Plantin as Hercule. At least latter has alternates with elongated ascenders for ‘b f h k’.
Bunny Ears is a lowercase-only version listed in the Berthold Fototypes E1 catalog with long alternates for ‘b f h k l’.
There are at least five digitizations. Smoke and Long Ears MF (latter with alts) are both limited lowercase-only freebies. Lexington has these alternates, too, plus several new ones. It adds a handtooled cut. Herkimer Bunrab NF is based on Herkules and also includes the five “bunny ear” alternates. Titanschrift has no alternates, but is the only version to feature the asymmetric ‘w’ present in Titantypo. It is used for the sample shown above.
