Colwell Handletter and Italic were designed in 1917 for ATF, based on the work of Elizabeth Colwell, a Chicago artist noted for her display work and hand-lettered pages. [McGrew 1993] “A 1947 exhibition on the history of type design in American noted her place as the only American female type designer known at that time.” [Wikipedia] The italic comes with swash alternates for ‘AGHMN’.
McKenna Handletter NF (Nick’s Fonts, 2002, used for sample) is a digital interpretation with added bold styles. Handle Oldstyle revives the caps. Colwell (Fleisch & Apostrophe, 2000) is a crudely drawn freebie and only loosely related.
