German sleeve for the EMI Electrola release of “Last Time I Saw Him”, the first single from Diana Ross’s 1973 album of the same name.

The uncredited designer used tightly spaced Neo Prisma and gave its lines two different colors: with the outer ones accentuated in white, the letterforms take on a radiant look.

  1. In my comment to the post about the Estoril Cascais 78 sticker, I had talked about how and when not to use Neo Prisma: its design doesn’t work equally well with each and every letter combination.

“DIANA ROSS”, in contrast, is pretty much perfect. The IANA sequence yields a nicely even pattern of verticals and diagonals. Then, more or less in the center, you have an O with concentric circles – bullseye! D and R are similar enough to imply a visual stave rhyme. And the double S conveniently is open at the top, linking the second line to the first, and closed toward the baseline, sealing off the setting – it almost has wordmark qualities. The tight-and-touching spacing is a prerequisite for the success, and the two colors the cherry on the cake!
