This catalog, directed by George Nelson (though I don’t know who was responsible for the design), laid the foundation for Herman Miller’s design, both product and graphic. It uses an unidentified Bodoni for text, and for the cover and headlines, Monotype Bodoni Ultra Bold Italic. Unlike other extra heavy versions of the typeface, Monotype’s has even more abrupt transitions from thick to thin strokes, resulting in counters that are often nearly rectangular rather than curved.
