Social visual bookmarking site Pinterest is testing a new look which, in addition to introducing a new layout with larger images, features Abril for board titles and other large type. Abril Text is rational with fairly hefty serifs, bringing Pinterest.com’s type closer in line with the headline face for the iOS apps: Sentinel, which is not yet publically available for web use. For all other text, Pinterest sticks with the safety of Neue Helvetica. The redesign was led by Jason Wilson, who is responsible for a variety of high profile efforts, including an Apple.com refresh in 2007 and a variety of Adobe interfaces.
The recently released Adelle Sans is also used sporadically throughout the site, most visibly in the About pages, and is perhaps being groomed to replace Helvetica, but I wouldn’t count on it. The Pinterest Blog diverts a bit, abandoning those two sans serifs and employing all-caps Proxima Nova for dates, labels, and tabs.
