Kikini o te Rehutai – this saying comes from a Tauranga Moana waiata (song) called “E Hika Tū Ake.” It refers to the pinch of the sea spray that is felt as waves continue to roll into the shore.

As Tauranga Moana moves into the future, history unfolds, moment by moment. The Tauranga Archives are a collection of such moments captured for generations to look back on. Your discoveries within Tauranga Archives, bringing light, fresh knowledge, and diverse stories, are likened to Kikini o te Rehutai, leaving you invigorated, curious, and perhaps intrigued.

The publication was designed with seafood at its core, seafood being a core part of Tauranga Moana. The publication features inspiration from green lipped mussels, paua (abalone) and pipi (a shell fish).

Bridging the worlds of taonga pūoro with the world of the orchestra, this concert showcases new and recent work by local composers and musicians. Sounds emerged from the seeds of conversation and imagination, expanding to become sound through the voices of the instrumentalists, and then combine to share local stories and to bridge worlds together.

A poster to advertise the event and accompanying accordion booklet were designed to showcase the mixing of the world, orchestra and taonga pūoro.

The concert took place at Orchestras Central, Gallagher Academy of Performing Arts, University of Waikato.

Mahi Tahi was an exhibition at X Block Gallery in Hamilton, NZ. The exhibition featured work by photographer Ying Wang who documented the process of making Joe Citizen’s Waka (a Māori canoe) sculpture, erected on the Victoria River in Hamilton–New Zealand. The poster uses Karla and a custom pattern typeface, based on the Roimata Tukutuku patterns. Custom type designed by Tutū studios. The e-mail invite included an animated gif.

Poster for an exhibition at DEMO gallery in Auckland run by Whitecliffe post-graduate students. Poster uses Graphik (with the alternate monocular a) and a custom typeface called Homerun designed by Tutū Studios.

Printed at A2 on 250gsm matte stock.

GT Pressura turned into a neon

Identity design for Bánh Mì Càphê, a Vietnamese restaurant in Hamilton, New Zealand. GT Pressura was used for the main type-setting with a custom typeface used for the logotype and headings. Being Pakeha designers (a Māori-language term for New Zealanders of European descent), special attention had to be given to the diacritics.
