Forgotten Shapes publishes digital reconstructions of typefaces that have somehow vanished. They are revived according to the guiding principle of Werktreue—that is, in a form as faithful to the original as possible. This happens in the context of creative appropriation and with the awareness that there can never be a single true reconstruction. Extensive research in archives and private collections, as well as conversations with (once) involved protagonists, form the point of departure for all of our projects. A typeface’s place in history is processed and made comprehensible through accompanying articles. These articles lead to an archive in which type design recalls fragments of its genesis, not least to broaden the discourse of contemporary design.
