Heartbeat (November 1981) utilises contoured Helvetica and Eurostile Extended for the album title and artist names respectively.

Chris & Cosey, sometimes known as Carter Tutti, are a musical duo formed in 1981, consisting of couple Chris Carter and Cosey Fanni Tutti, both previously members of industrial music pioneers Throbbing Gristle. Techno Primitive (stylized as Technø Primitive, 1985) keeps things simple; using only Antique Olive in two weights, Black and Nord.

British 30×40″ Quad poster design for David Lynch’s Eraserhead. It makes heavy use of ITC Serif Gothic, with a particularly interesting curved effect applied to the main title element along the bottom of the poster.

This now classic surrealist psychological horror film follows Henry Spencer as he tries to survive his industrial environment, his angry girlfriend, and the unbearable screams of his newly born mutant child.

First published in 2012, Herb Lubalin: American Graphic Designer 1918–81 is a limited edition monograph of the legendary US typographer and graphic designer. It came in hardback format, packaged in a presentation box. Only 2000 copies were made available.

The 448-page monograph features hundreds of examples of Lubalin’s work (many never before published), and previously unseen photographs of him at work and play.

Divided into sections on his work in Advertising, Typography, and Editorial, it features an extensive biographical text by Adrian Shaughnessy that includes interviews with George Lois, Seymour Chwast, Alan Peckolick, Carl Fischer, Steven Heller, and members of the Lubalin family.

Produced in association with the Herb Lubalin Study Center at Cooper Union, New York, and with the active cooperation of the Lubalin family, this monograph has become the definitive work on one of America’s most influential designers.

The opening spread for the Editorial chapter features reproductions of the Avant Garde magazine logotype (which led to ITC Avant Garde Gothic), a cover of U&lc featuring ITC Benguiat, and a cover of Fact magazine with Caslon 471.

The Electro Harmonix Electric Mistress Flanger/Filter Matrix, designed in 1975–1976 by David Cockerell, was the first ever flanger to be made in a pedal format.

This particular version was available between 1976 and 1981. “Flanger/Filter Matrix” is in ITC Serif Gothic. Knob labels are in all-caps Futura. The Electro-Harmonix logo is in Skjald, see the dedicated post.

Note: The unidentified type of the main Electric Mistress logo remains something of a mystery. Upon checking various forums, it's been hypothesised that this typeface is either custom lettering, or a modified version of an existing type such as DeCoro or similar.

The Deluxe Electric Mistress was offered along side the original Mistress between 1978 and 1981 and later reissued in 1999, and now is discontinued.

ITC Serif Gothic is the typeface used in the original visual identity of Crystal Light. The American brand of powdered and sugar free (i.e., artificially sweetened) beverage mixes was introduced in 1982 to a test market and released to the public in April 1984.

The logo uses the Heavy weight with several of its alternate glyphs: spurred r, descending s, tailless t, and double-story a. (The digital version has these forms for r and s, but lacks the original default glyphs as well as any alternates.)

The sans with the tiny serifs also appeared in other weights, and alongside varying other typefaces, in the packaging designs. The advertising campaigns including TV commercials and print ads featured Linda Evans, Priscilla Presley, and Raquel Welch. According to Logopedia’s timeline, the wordmark in ITC Serif Gothic was phased out around 1997.

The quality seal uses Palatino.

Banner and titles for UK music television show The Old Grey Whistle Test which ran from 1971 to 1988 on the BBC. According to presenter Bob Harris, the programme derived its name from a Tin Pan Alley phrase from years before.

The banner evolved between 1971 and 1975, including white and yellow versions, and initially using Pipeline in mixed case, before settling on the familiar typeface, which would be used until mid-1982. This design, using ITC Busorama in uppercase, is arguably the most enduring and recognisable.

Artwork for “Being Boiled” (with “Circus of Death” on the B-side). The 7″ single was the debut release by The Human League. It came out in June 1978 on Fast Product.

The typefaces used in this design were typical of the time. Also noteworthy are the graphics, which came from Letraset Illustration sheets.
