Suped Up is the new power-pop project of Brian Dove and Noah Bowman. The band released two singles, “Crosswords” and “No Ghost No Problem” ahead of the release of their debut self-titled album (out April 25, 2025 via Hilltop Recordings).

As one half of said duo, I got to take the lead on creating assets for the new album, which was a great excuse to use some of my favorite fonts (and one of my own)!

The album artwork and cassette packaging uses PicNic for the band name and track listing, with Gayot New Thin for accents and the wider side of Obviously’s variable font for smaller typesetting.

On the album release show poster, Megazoid makes an appearance and Obviously’s variable axes get put to further use.

The lyric video for the single “No Ghost No Problem” also features PicNic, Gayot New, and Obviously.

Ed Benguiat’s Discotheque in use on the cover of Robert Lory’s novel The Thirteen Bracelets. This cover is from the first edition published by Ace Books in 1974. The cover art is uncredited (presumably by Davis Meltzer). The title is set in the lightest of Discotheque’s three weights, with the author's name set in a (likely manually) widened version of that weight.

The synopsis on the back cover is set in all-caps Optima.

Common House put Clearly to great use for the branding, cocktail menu, website, and “lift tickets” for their Alpine ski bar The Matterhorn. Clearly is used for the bar’s logotype and as the primary display typeface with Aperçu and Aperçu Condensed as complimentary sans-serifs.

Keith Freeman, Common House Creative Director, talks about the inspiration behind the pop-up bar concept in the Daily Progress:

In a more significant way, though, the theme was influenced by something my dad always touted as his favorite place on earth: the ski lodge after a long day on the mountain with friends and family,” he said. “The warmth, the camaraderie, the drinks and snacks, the mess of thawing scarves and hats and socks. To him, to me, it was always the best part of winter and our favorite place to reminisce about the day’s adventures and simply enjoy being together. Selfishly, this was what I wanted to recreate and share with Charlottesville. The mountains are not too far and many are familiar with this experience. But for those who have never been to a mountain lodge, we wanted to bottle that feeling and make it more accessible.

T-shirt and tour poster for musician Mal Blum. Graphic designer and musician Karl Kuehn utilized Gayot New as a display type for the artists' names and the monospace-inspired MVB Margin for supporting text.

Birder’s Journal and Forager’s Log notebooks by West Virginia design studio Big Fog. This pair of complementary notebooks was made to help document your findings on outdoor adventures. Each notebook is Riso printed and spiral bound with a glow in the dark coil.

The Birder’s Journal cover is set in Big Fog’s own Discotack (available from Blaze Type), while the Forager’s Log makes use of the bolder side of Undercase Type’s Fraunces. Both notebooks feature Spoof Light for the smaller typesetting on the cover and interior pages.

Posters for the 18th Anniversary Party of WRIR, an independent radio station from Richmond, Virgina, which will take place at Hardywood brewery. Local graphic designer Brent McCormick utilized Gayot New for the headline copy, with band names set in Job Clarendon, and additional show details set in ITC Ronda. “97.3 wrir” is OCR-A with a chrome effect.

New brand identity and product labels for SoSS, a hot sauce company based in Charlottesville, VA. The logo, brand identity, and core product labels were designed by West Virginia-based design studio Big Fog. Label illustrations for Reaper's Blush and Watermelon Dragon by Alex Luciano and Meel Tamphanon, respectively.

The SoSS logotype is a customized Zoo Condensed with thicker thin strokes, softer corners, and stylized strokes under the O. The brand identity utilizes VC Henrietta for display and headlines, Swear Medium for subheadlines, and Degular as a supporting text face.

The bold weight of Ed Benguiat's Discotheque in use on the jacket of The Other Side of the Rainbow: With Judy Garland on the Dawn Patrol, a biography of Judy Garland, known for her role as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, by author Mel Tormé. It seems the first and second editions of the book used this design.

It is a story that has never been told, a profile in some depth of a frenetic nine-month period in Judy’s life. Steady Rise Bread Co. is the home bakery of Big Fog illustrator/designer Valerie Burgess.

The logo, designed by Big Fog, features Hoodzpah's left-leaning retro script Beverly Drive by Amy Wood in the primary wordmark. The packaging and brand elements are set in Room 205 from Beasts of England and Polytype’s semi-monospaced Hellenic Typewriter. A little bit of New Forest, also from Beasts of England, is visible in the “HAND MIXED/FRESH BAKED” graphics on stickers and business cards. The SR monogram is a slightly customized Room 205.

Brand identity and website for TriFlorals, a wedding and event florist in Raleigh, NC. The identity, designed by Big Fog, features Cristian Vargas' gorgeous Salvaje Display in the logo, which is paired with Windsor for headlines, Syne Bold for subheadlines, and Pretend Foundry’s Pinopolis for body copy. TriFlorals approached us wanting to create a brand that was different than your typical florist. They wanted to stick out from the traditional wedding crowd with a welcoming energy. One of their main goals is to “demystify flowers” and encourage people to “get hands on stems”—to make the joy of working with flowers less intimidating and more accessible.

As it says on their website, Science™ really does say that looking at flowers makes you feel better, so we wanted the TriFlorals brand to feel like stumbling on a field of bright blooms, like the first day of Spring all the time. We created their logo and brand identity (including brand fonts, brand colors, and brand illustrations), and then designed and built their WordPress website. The site features a growing collection of illustrations and animations.

The Big Fog logo is custom lettering, animated on the homepage and menu by combining scanned Riso-printed frames.
