From A Practice for Everyday Life:

Duro Olowu is a collector: his practice as a fashion designer is informed by the ever-expanding range of textiles, artworks, found objects and ephemera he has amassed over the course of his career. In 2016, Olowu curated Making and Unmaking at Camden Arts Centre; we were commissioned by Camden Arts Centre and co-publisher Ridinghouse to design a publication to accompany the exhibition.

Olowu’s curation brought together diverse and unconventional objects and works, but certain aspects of the exhibition remained traditional; our design for the book highlights this tension between the traditional and the contemporary. Text pages are laid out in a classic way, with generous margins to the top and bottom, but with oversized page numbers. The use of a serif font is traditional in this context, but we chose a highly contemporary cut with unusual stresses, and the type on the cover is bold and heavy, like a protest poster, referencing the political themes running through the exhibition. The large, folded jacket references the textiles throughout the show.

The display typeface used for the catalog is Bureau Grot Compressed. It’s paired with an unidentified serif for text [edit: it’s SangBleu Kingdom with SangBleu OG Serif Italic, see comments.

Waka Waka is a Los Angeles based studio focusing on wood furniture and functional objects designed and hand crafted by Shin Okuda. His work ranges from seating concepts, utilitarian objects and space design, all of which demonstrate a simplicity in form, subtle detailing and a unique interpretation of proportion.

For Collection No.2, designer Ben Mingo wanted “to soften the typographic approach to pair with the wood materials used for each piece. We ended using Agipo Condensed and Century Schoolbook Monospace to achieve this tactile feeling”, he comments. Images by Abraham Campillo, development by Aristide Benoist. Rejoice is an album by Nigerian drummer, composer and songwriter Tony Allen (1940–2020) and South African trumpeter, flugelhornist, cornetist, singer and composer Hugh Masekela (1939–2018), released in March 2020, shortly before Allen’s death, by World Circuit.

The cover was designed by Florence de la Fournière, with art direction from Neel Panchal. The bouncing letterforms for the title appear to be taken from Press Gothic, featuring a hyper-extended j with customized hook. The artist names are in Bebas Neue.

‘Rejoice’ is a very special collaboration between Tony Allen, the legendary drummer and co-founder of Afrobeat, and Hugh Masekela, the master trumpet player of South African jazz.

Having first met in the 70s thanks to their respective close associations with Fela Kuti, the two world-renowned musicians talked for decades about making an album together. When, in 2010, their touring schedules coincided in the UK, the moment presented itself and producer Nick Gold took the opportunity to record their encounter. The unfinished sessions, consisting of all original compositions by the pair, lay in archive until after Masekela passed away in 2018. With renewed resolution, Tony Allen and Nick Gold, with the blessing and participation of Hugh Masekela’s estate, unearthed the original tapes and finished recording the album in summer 2019 at the same London studio where the original sessions had taken place.

Eurostile Bold Extended in use for a collaboration by Pigalle and Nike.

The collaboration has generated a series of apparel and footwear collections, and also focused on supporting community-building programming by providing safe harbor for players. […]

Ouroboros in use for the album art of FDC (Filles Du Calvaire), a French rap album by Parisian rapper Rad Cartier. Album art designed by Soimadou Ibrahim-Aliamane. Ouroboros was designed by Ariel Martín Pérez, and is available from the open source foundry Velvetyne.

Beaugan is a Japanese sustainable fashion brand specialized in mud-dying as practiced by the people from the Amami Islands for over 1,300 years. By using natural elements, they can keep the Amami’s dyeing technique alIve. Cinematographer Louis Mas directed their last lookbook. Poster design by Soimadou Ibrahim-Aliamane.

The poster typography uses caps from Kessler, with Univers Ultra Condensed for the credits.

Panton – Environments, colours, systems, patterns / Panton – Miljøer, farver, systemer, mønstre is a richly illustrated monograph about Danish designer Verner Panton (1926–1998). The book comes in a bilingual edition in Danish and English. It was designed by Michael Jensen of K Grafik, using François Rappo’s Apax (Optimo, 2016).

Verner Panton is the enfant terrible of Danish design. While his Danish design colleagues during the 1950s and 60s prioritised natural materials and manual craftsmanship, Panton went abroad and experimented with coloured plastic, fibre glass, steel and synthetic fabrics and tried out new industrial mass-production methods.

This book examines Panton’s almost scientific approach to environments, colours, systems and patterns as it unfolded in colourful total interiors and imaginative product designs. A limited edition photobook and promotional poster, designed by Barcelona-based designer Jorge León.

Barcelona pays tribute to the members of its team who live or spend seasons in “la ciudad condal”, one of the most skated cities in the world.
