Hi, I’m Coert De Decker, the guy behind Kustomtype. I’ve been obsessed with letters for as long as I can remember. It all started when I was 16, ditching school to chase a job as an illustrator. No fancy diploma—just raw passion and a knack for drawing. My first gig? Hand-carving letters on tombstones. Yep, you read that right. Fonts were scarce back then, so I started creating my own. That’s when the love affair with type truly began.

Back in the day, I was already making posters for local bands and parties. No Photoshop, no Illustrator—just scissors, glue, and a photocopier. I learned by doing. Type spacing, curves, contrast—it’s all second nature to me now. Later, I fine-tuned my skills at the Plantin Institute of Typography in Antwerp, studying under some legendary type designers.

At Kustomtype, I’m all about creating fonts that speak. Fonts that evoke a mood, tell a story, and make people feel something. My catalog features over 80 unique font families—each one crafted with personality, a bit of grit, and a whole lot of heart.

All fonts are designed for creatives who want something different. Something that stands out.

Let’s be real: you don’t meet a font designer every day. But here I am, from a little village in Flanders, turning my lifelong passion into a business. I launched Kustomtype in 2011, after years of drawing, testing, and refining.

Today, my fonts are used by designers, brands, and creatives worldwide. Everything I create is custom-made, driven by the belief that good design starts with good type.

Everything that contains the term “Kustom” has to do with the subculture. “Kustom Culture” stands for the way of life of special people, artists, which deviates from the usual way of life. They most commonly come from the alternative music world or are graphic designers.
