The exhibition Petits mondes (“Small Worlds”) at the Hôtel des Arts TPM presents works from the collections of the Centre Pompidou, the Centre National des Arts Plastiques, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, and the Mobilier National. It explores the world of childhood, where furniture, toys, decorative objects, and illustrated books stimulate imagination and creativity, promoting children's personal development.

For the visual identity and the catalogue, Marc Armand used Rillus (as the main typeface) and Malamocco (for body text).

Design Parade is a double festival for product design and interior architecture organized by Villa Noailles. It takes place annually in Hyères and Toulon in Southern France. The visual identity for the 2024 edition was once more designed by Marc Armand. This time, he worked with Image Future, a new release by Guillaume Goron. In some of the applications, text is shown in capitals from an extrabold weight, filled with a pattern. These glazed ceramic letters were made in collaboration with Maximilien Pellet. The accompanying sans is Emmanuel Besse’s Enduro. Both typefaces are available from Production Type.

A springboard for young fashion designers since 1986, the International Festival of Fashion, Photography and Accessories – Hyères will hold its 40th edition from 16 to 19 October 2025 at the Villa Noailles. The jury for the three competitions – fashion, accesoires, and photography – includes Marine Serre, Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, Christian Louboutin, Alexandre Mattiussi, and Florence Tétier, among others. It was announced using Respira and Krasz. The additional informations and texts are set in Enduro.

More than just a competition, the International Festival of Fashion, Photography and Accessories – Hyères has become, over the past 40 years, a major cultural and artistic event that also offers the public fashion and photography exhibitions, as well as conferences. During the four days of the festival, the Villa Noailles, a place of creative effervescence, will bring together designers, journalists, style office managers, representatives of ministries and leaders of major brands, all of whom are essential supporters of the competition.

Monaako Script takes its name from a town in the south of France, referencing one of its inspirations: the lettering of Saint Raphaël Liqueurs, which could be seen along the roads of southern France since the 1950s. The choice of the name Monaako is likely a tribute to the French typographic landscape of that era.

Hyères, home to the Villa Noailles, is also a city in the south of France, as is Marseille, where the event’s communication materials were displayed. In 2023, the arts center “celebrated the Centenary of the Clos Saint-Bernard, known as the villa Noailles”. Designer Marc Armand used Monaako together with Enduro for the identity of the anniversary and the materials for the various events.

The uppercase letters of Monaako are extremely lively, colorful, and their unconventional style tends to leave a lasting impression. They work well to create a strong typographic identity. Their geometric structure harmoniously interacts with the shapes of the building.

The event logo, possibly inspired by the cockade of France, was created using the numbers from Monaako Script, outlined.

Every summer since 2020, the Villa Noailles and the Hôtel des Arts TPM have played host to the national design collections during the Design Parade Festival in Toulon. For the third edition of Les Aliénés du Mobilier national, some thirty artists, designers and interior architects have given free rein to their creativity, reinterpreting and transforming pieces that have been removed from the Mobilier national’s inventory to breathe new life into them, in a scenography designed by Paul Bonlarron.

Marc Armand is in charge of the visual identity of the Villa Noailles and chose Malamocco (again) for the vibrant and colourful visuals of Remix’s posters and catalogue.

Today the name of Marie-Laure de Noailles (1902–1970) is commonly associated with her outstanding role as a patron and furtherer of modern art. Together with her husband Charles, she financed artistic and architectural projects such as Luis Buñuel’s seminal movie L’Âge d’Or (1930) and the couple’s own summer residence Villa Noailles in the coastal town of Hyères, commissioned from Robert Mallet-Stevens in 1924. But Marie-Laure was not only the center of an exquisite circle of artists and intellectuals, she was a creator herself. She began to publish literary works in 1937 and additionally turned to painting in 1946, largely inspired by the Cubist and Surrealist movements.

Marie-Laure peintre is the title of an exhibition mounted at Villa Noailles in spring 2024. In the larger framework of celebrating the Villa’s 100th anniversary, it aimed at bringing back to light this aspect largely fallen into oblivion of this otherwise colorful figure. On display was a cross-section of works made between 1938 and 1969, ranging from scrapbooks to oil paintings to lithographies and etchings, not to forget her paintings on ceramic plates.

The poster advertising the exhibition was designed by Marc Armand. It shows a black-and-white photograph of Marie-Laure de Noailles amidst some of her paintings on a pale rose tone that creates a broad frame around it. The rose field in turn is framed by a thumb-wide border in green and blue tones that most likely hints at one of her artworks – without showing it. (If you want to see it, go visit the exhibition.)

Extracted from that are the colors Armand applies to the typography. The fonts in use are Tempel Softland as the top-level eye-catcher. It’s supported by the straightforward sans Enduro by Emmanuel Besse for information about the venue. Alex Slobzheninov’s Agrandir features for the credit of art dealer Johan Fleury de Witte and the logotype of Villa Noailles.

First made available in 2023, Tempel Softland is Reymund Schröder’s latest deduction from his Tempel Grotesk. While Tempel Grotesk already sported a blocky and black appeal, it still has the crispness of today’s digital type. In Tempel Softland, on the other hand, the edges are rounded off while the lettershapes themselves adapt to a condensed, squarish surface and remind one of bricks. In sum, Tempel Softland evokes 19th-century wood type as much as a certain retro-futurism. Both Tempel variants and also Enduro can be licensed from Production Type.

The relation of content and form might be the number one topic in every discourse about graphic design. The visuals presented in this post provide a very interesting example in this regard.

Jacques Rougerie, born 1945, is a French architect mainly known for his interest in hostile habitats such as the outer space and the deep sea. Inspired by adventure novels like Jules Verne’s Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas and by the groundbreaking diving explorations of Jacques-Yves Cousteau, Rougerie began to conceive underwater architecture in 1973. Under the title Jacques Rougerie – Living with the sea, the Villa Noailles dedicates a comprehensive exhibition to this pioneer architect. The venue is located in the city of Hyères on the French Mediterranean coast and thereby within a stone’s throw of some of the sites where Rougerie realized aquatic projects.

The advertising materials to promote the show build upon drawings, computer renderings, and architectural models that tell a story of technical advance as much as a history of science fiction visualization. Rougerie’s formal language evidently is inspired by nature itself. It’s in this aspect that the typographic choice is so interesting: the main display type used here is Gothic Lab, designed in collaboration between Production Type and Ivan Murit, a specialist in generative design.

Gothic Lab is based on the condensed, monolinear skeleton of Antique Gothic that – coincidentally – shows similarities to the sans-serif used on the title to Jules Verne’s seminal novel around the Nautilus and to the frontispiece with regards to the way in which the stems of the letters are brought to life through special effects. Gothic Lab comes with five different “skins”, patterns inspired by nature and size-specifically generated: Elephant, Croco, Snake, Mantis and Gecko, the latter used here in the LD variant with has less detailing than the HD style.

To draw a conclusion on content and form, both the images and the predominant typeface stem from an exploration of natural forms. As a result, there’s a great feeling of convergence without one part merely mimicking the other.

The other typefaces that complement the main act are Kreuz and Enduro, both by Emmanuel Besse and likewise available from Production Type, and Pangram Pangram’s Agrandir, used to typeset the logo of Villa Noailles.

The Design Parade is a yearly festival held in Hyères and Toulon, two neighboring cities at the southernmost tip of the Provence region in France. What started in 2006 in Hyères as an event to celebrate product design was extended in 2016 to Toulon and to the field of interior design. At the core of both festivals is a competition among ten selected young talents. They are organized by Villa Noailles, a center for contemporary art and architecture of international esteem since 1996, located in a modernist gem built by Robert Mallet-Stevens.

Here we show posters and catalogs for the 2023 edition of Design Parade, designed by Marc Armand, a longtime collaborator of Villa Noailles. He chose to create a “dp23” logo from the typeface Metaballs by Maximage, enhanced with a metallic 3D effect. The second typeface coining the 2023 visual identity is Enduro, designed by Emmanuel Besse and published by Production Type. Enduro is a sans serif of industrial appeal and a comprehensive collection that comes in three widths and a total of 44 styles. While the posters highlight the dynamic and eye-catching character of Enduro Black Italic, the headlines inside the catalogs put on that same card and combine it with upright and lighter cuts for the reading text and the captions.

Seconde nature: pour un design durable is an exhibition produced by Villa Noailles and Centre Pompidou during the 2023 edition of the Design Parade event in Toulon, France, showcasing Centre Pompidou’s product design collection. The exhibition presents how designers tackle the issue of sustainability and climate change through their production.

Marc Armand designed the exhibition’s identity, with posters, signage, booklets and the catalogue using Metaballs and Malamocco.

Futurissimo, l’utopie du design italien is an exhibition collaboration between Villa Noailles and Centre Pompidou during Design Parade 2021 in Toulon (France), showcasing the Centre Pompidou collection of Italian designers.

Marc Armand designed the identity of the exhibition, including posters, signage, booklets and the catalogue using Standard and Malamocco.

Villa Noailles is a national contemporary art center in the city of Hyères, France. Founded in 1920s by the couple of benefactors Charles and Marie-Laure de Noailles, the Villa Noailles is an early modernist house built by the architect Robert Mallet-Stevens. At the time, it was the meeting point of the artistic avant-garde, with great names such as Pablo Picasso, Alberto Giacometti, Jean Cocteau, or Luis Buñuel. It was acquired by the municipality of Hyères in the 1970s and after a long renovation, it opened to the public as an art center in the 1990s.

From March to May 2021, the Villa Noailles hosted an exhibition called Archi-ville. Hyères, l’architecture de la ville en dessin (English: Archi-city. Hyères, the architecture of the city in drawings). It focused on the representations of the city through the notion of pittoresque, which etymologically means “worth of being painted”. The 18th century was the beginning of tourism, and the birth of the postcard: only at that time the “postcard” was in fact a small painting brought as a souvenir from a destination, representing memorable views of a city, exaggerating the lights or creating montages of monuments that were far from close to each other. In this perspective, the curators of the exhibition collected diverse paintings of Hyères, whether they be from professional artists or amateurs, and invited their resident artists and students from the high school of the city to create their own interpretation of the city.

To illustrate this position, graphic designer Marc Armand, in charge of Villa Noailles’ identity, designed two posters that almost resemble stage setting. In fact, the posters show two paintings intertwined, one of them playing the role of a frame and the other put at the center of the format. The central painting changes between the two posters, one showing a residential building with cars parked at the bottom and the other representing a church: each poster plays with the chromatic scale of its center. This setting makes us perceive the artificial aspect of the city imagined in the painting.

Marc Armand used Kreuz (Production Type) for the title Archi-ville and Villa Noailles’ standard identity typeface Agrandir (Pangram Pangram) for the other info. The boldness of Kreuz and its harsh design shows how the city can be industrial. The bold weight of the letters echoes the brushstrokes of the background’s painting – it mimics it, with a subtle color gradation.

Euphoria (Comicraft), designed by Janik Sandbothe and available from Typelab.fr, is used for the 35th International Festival for Photography, Fashion and Fashion Accessoires at Villa Noailles Hyères. The visual identity was designed by Marc Armand. Euphoria is paired with Agrandir by Alex Slobzheninov (Pangram Pangram) – the typeface was already in use as a brand typeface for Villa Noailles.

Whether they are developed as part of an architecture degree, a biennial, a research project or a more conventional order, the projects gathered for the exhibition "Une chambre ailleurs" are part of both in this phantasmagoria of the hotel as a place of possibilities far from home, and also show the will to find new devices of hospitality far from known typologies. Through the projects, the exhibition addresses the rituals and spaces produced by and for the voluntary travelers, whether tourists, workers or walkers.It shows another domesticity, which does not hesitate to experience forms that everyday life can not offer.— Villa Noailles

The “Festival international de Mode, de Photographie, et d’Accessoires de mode à Hyères” is an annual festival, held by Villa Noailles. All events organised by the Hyères based art center use their brand typeface of Agrandir.

Villa Noailles is an art centre of national interest based in Hyères, France. Among its activities are the Festival International de Mode, de Photographie et d’Accessoire, the Design Parade Toulon, the Design Parade Hyères and various exhibitions in their Villa. Their corporate identity by Marc Armand uses Agrandir (Pangram Pangram).

La Loge is a theatre, dance & concert venue in Paris since 2009. Marc Armand aka Tu Sais Qui art directed its visual identity since the beginning. In 2016, he switched from Hobo to the Kreuz typeface family as the main type, keeping the iconic yellow and pink colors and Vista Sans typeface.

The season brochures are little leaflets saddle stitch binded with very flashy use of typefaces and fluorescent inks. In addition to that, a silkscreened poster is produced each summer. Its back reveals the summer program and can be folded to be distributed. Kreuz is used in regular and extended widths. It also appears everywhere else in the venue, from beer cups to the website.
