LALA Open Air Festival, held in Perth, Australia, debuted in 2023. Launching a new open-air music festival presented a unique challenge: establishing a compelling brand presence in a saturated market without the support of pre-existing assets or past event visuals. The identity and year-one campaign required a thoughtful approach—one that would captivate audiences and create a cohesive visual narrative from the ground up.

Entering the competitive festival market for the first time, the visual identity had to immediately capture attention and convey credibility. The campaign emphasized bold, memorable design to make a striking first impression, compensating for the absence of archival footage or photography.

The final result was a visually immersive and highly adaptable identity that amplified the festival’s presence across both digital and physical platforms, setting the stage for its inaugural year and beyond. The festival logo is based on Muscle; headlines use WT Skrappa and Franklin Gothic is used for information.

Me and Scott Mellor go way back, all the way to the Romborama days—my first album. But it wasn’t until mid-2019 that we really locked in and started working together as a solid team. Since then, we’ve been shaping the visual identity of The Bloody Beetroots piece by piece, staying true to what makes this project stand out: our love for analog meeting digital, where print collides with tech, and where we embrace human imperfections in a world obsessed with being flawless.

An overarching identity design for The Bloody Beetroots, the iconic Italian electronic punk artist. A bold and dark style that can work across a multitude of exectuions including tour art, live visuals and collaborative release collateral.

It was integral that the identity was stylised as to not get tired throughout an intense touring and release schedule. StudioThinktank created an aesthetic that has become synonymous with the artist, and is used since 2020.

Single release artwork and motion graphics for “Hardwired”, the second single off the forthcoming ShockOne album. A continuation of the aesthetic of “Follow Me”, using the transluscent material in liquid form to act as a digital intravenious transfusion. A number of different outputs were created as visuals for the single that were used across socials, streaming services and print marketing.

A good example of how Neue Helvetica can be used in various formats to create hierachy in design. Designed in the box, then printed through a Riso machine and rescanned.

Identity design and creative direction for ROAM Festival, a three-day camping festival centered around electronic music in the south west of Western Australia. Due to covid-19, the festival was postponed for a year, and finally canceled in 2023.

The logo pairs characters from ARK-ES, SK Quadratica and Deus. Wallnutt Corps is used for the wordmark, and information uses Mabgate.

Art direction for Sony Music Entertainment UK Ltd / Syco Music.

Syco Music tasked StudioThinktank with creating a typeface logo for UK recording artist Labrinth, along with visuals for “Miracle”, the first single off his forthcoming studio album.

Sony provided stills from the already filmed video treatment, with stunning visual effects of a child covered in feathers. StudioThinktank® worked on the layout and type work for the single, customising classic typeface Motter Ombra, pairing it with custom handwriting to create a subtle lofi, physical aesthetic to contrast the hi fidelity imagery.

The single was released through Sony Music UK on June 9, 2019, with the artwork circulated worldwide and through large digital billboards in key locations in London.

Working concepts featuring several additional typefaces including Eurostile Extended, ITC Benguiat, Jabin, and Helvetica (unused).

Brand design for Higher-Grñd, a music event series based in Perth, Western Australia. The launch event for the brand featured House and Techno artists The Black Madonna and Maceo Plex.

The design features three typefaces from the 20th century: stretched Compacta for the lineup, small print in Helvetica and the name of the event uses Introspect, a face from the early 1970s designed by Phil Martin. In another post on Fonts In Use with Introspect, Martin is quoted about his design:

I had this crazy idea, can I design a face where some of the lowercase letters touch themselves in places where they are not supposed to? A colleague said, “If you can do that you might want to name it ‘Bad Printing.’ That’s what happens in bad printing, you know.”

Create + Explore is a conversation between mediums from visual to auditory, providing an intersectional platform for beat-makers and photographers to create and explore the power of artistic collaboration. Each project is created through a process of pairing a beatmaker and a photographer. The beatmaker creates original music and sends it off to the photographer as an impetus and inspiration to generating a pictorial exploration. This process links two of our most indelible sensory experiences through a photographic interpretation of original music. — createandexplore.co

Create + Explore is a collaboration between Braden Lee and Matthew Lawless. The straightforward typography (centre-aligned white capitals from Gotham, paired with a logo and a tag line which uses DIN 1451) provides a clean and unobtrusive branding for the images in their Instagram feed. In the videos, the same typography is brought to live with animation.

The branding for the festival was based on Attitude Inline, with some letters modified to create a cleaner typeface.

HWLS is the music project of artist Justin Elwin. StudioThinktank® worked with Justin and Future Classic to create an overarching aesthetic tone for the project that could be used throughout tour and release marketing.

StudioThinktank®’s Scott Mellor, already having a close relationship with Justin, was trusted to create concepts based on his intrinsic knowledge of Justin’s personal style and interests.

StudioThinktank® continue to work closely with HWLS to create consistant and foreward thinking design elements for the project.

The fonts used for the I Might Be Dead mixtape include Moore Computer (front), FB Titling Gothic (spine), and the ultra-compressed Cinderblock 400 (outlined for “1524”) The HWLS logo is custom drawn, while the Future Classic logo uses Adobe Garamond with a custom ut ligature and a c from another face.
