After Russia is an album of songs based on the poems of the so-called unnoticed generation, writers and poets who began writing in exile but never found their audience back home. The record was released in 2023 and marks the 100th anniversary of the first wave of Russian emigration.

The album cover and its website use Loos by CSTM Fonts (reimagined by Tuman), the serif Nib by Colophon, and the slightly wild display font Nieuk by Laïc.

The word qalam refers to a reed pen used for calligraphy, but since this year it is also a new media outlet showing the world history and culture as seen by people living in Central Asia.

The publication is now available in Russian and Kazakh, but the team is planning to introduce the English language version soon as well. The titles on their website, which was created by Tuman, are set in Heather Type by Letterhead, and Canela Text from Commercial Type is used for subheaders and body copy, and Arial for buttons and selected subheaders. The sans serif used for social media posts is CoFo Sans from Contrast Foundry.

The Qalam logo appears to be custom drawn.

The Two Avant-guards?! Rhymes / Два авангарда!? Рифмы is an exhibition put on by the AZ Museum of Moscow as a part of the contemporary art festival First factory of Avant-garde. The exhibition took place at the Ivanovo Regional Museum of Art in the city of Ivanovo, Russia, which rhymed avant-garde masterpieces from the Ivanovo collection with distinguished creations by artists from the latter half of the 20th century.

Ira Koshaleva of Tuman studio was in charge of the exhibit's visual communications and used Beatrice Display as the main font for the project, including posters, catalogs, and pamphlets. The supporting sans is unidentified. [It appears to be Aeroport, see comments.]

Tuman Studio created the identity and membership kit for regular guests of the Manezh Association:

Typography brings architectural rhythm and historical heritage while staying contemporary. Illustrations indicate unique architectural and archaeological exhibits found during large-scale excavations of the surrounding areas, as well as the reconstruction of the Gostiny Dvor in the 1990s. They are kept in the permanent exhibition of the museum.

The cold silver-blue color palette rhymes with the colors of the facades of the museum association. The lighter version of Apoc fits perfectly in this universe.

Design by Ksenia Kotlyarovskaya, with art direction from Ira Kosheleva. The Манеж logo appears to be set in Gill Sans.

The exhibition Да живет иное во мне (“Let the Other Live in Me”) is –

dedicated to human communication with other forms of life, such as animals, plants, bacteria, large-scale physical phenomena and technological systems. Human being is on the border of two worlds, biological and technological, belonging to both of them at the same time. The viewers of the exhibition get a unique experience of interaction with the other, based not on the mechanisms of direct control and subordination, but on the strategies of symbiosis and dialogue.

The exhibition was held at the Tretyakov Gallery in the Laboratoria Art & Science space. Among the featured artists were Marina Abramović, Ralf Baecker, Art Orienté objet, Agnes Mayer-Brandis, Saša Spačal, Jenna Sutela, Elena Nikonole, Nina Rajcic, and Danya Vasiliev.

The design of the exhibition was created by the Moscow based studio Tuman and shows an engaging use of the Cyrillic version of Apoc Italic in an organic aesthetic. Apoc is supported by Suisse Int’l. From our interview with designer Ira Kosheleva, art director at Tuman studio:

Project ОМ130 began from the album Save My Speech Forever. It consists of 21 compositions written by modern musicians to the poems of Osip Mandelstam. It was important to us to visualize the poet’s voice, while creating a bright, vivid style.

Together with Roma Liberov, author of the idea, we were putting a lot of thought into this: how to convey the mood of a celebration of the anniversary — since a tribute album is not a memorial, but a gift. And that’s when Apoc and Nostra came to the rescue. They co-exist in an awesome way — both have variations in thickness that rhyme in weight, and accentual serifs and strokes make you feel like you are lost in the woods, grabbing tree branches.
