Formal Settings designed this year’s edition of Bog Hånd Værk, the annual publication by Forening for Boghaandværk, the Danish Association for Book Arts.

The content pages are printed on a so called “Riso-offset” machine, pairing standard CMYK colors with the Risograph print technique. The cover is produced from surplus “Switch sheets” from classic Riso-production printed with three-color screen print.

Notes on Book Design is a collection of 50 texts by Amanda-Li Kollberg and Siri Lee Lindskrog of Formal Settings, based on books from the collection of the Hopscotch Reading Room in Berlin. The texts draw parallels between the book as a design object and the cultural movements, political landscapes and economic conditions under which it was created.

The 50 texts are paired with our intro­duction, a foreword by Hopscotch Reading Room and an afterword in which designer, author and educator Prem Krishnamurthy offers additional framing and perspective to the project.

The book was published by Onomatopee in an edition of 2,000 copies and is distributed worldwide through onomatopee.net. The back cover illustration is by John Seung-Hwan Lee.

The monograph for Cuban artist Miguel Alejandro Machado Suárez is printed with silkscreen on canvas cover and contrasted with orange edge color on the book block. The limited edition comes with an original artwork as well as a hand bound box with copper foil embossing.

The typeface is Reply by Approximate Type. The book was published by BODE Projects.

Berlin based type and graphic design studio Formal Settings created a flexible design system for Ants 1+1=3, an experimental dance theatre piece by the Danish choregrapher Anastasija Olescuka. The piece “puts the hyper organised communities of ants under a microscope and explores how they function together as super organisms”.

The typography pairs the Light cut of Apoc with the Regular weight of Favorit.
