In 1994, editor James Brown spotted an opportunity to create a general interest men's magazine in a world fixated on yuppies and the new man. With a team of bucky young hopefuls, they birthed Loaded, a magazine that went on to define the lad culture of the 90s.

The magazine quickly became a cultural phenomenon, offering a blend of irreverent humour, gonzo journalism, celebrity interviews, sports and jaw-dropping images, tapping into the aspirations, interests and rebellious attitudes of young men, and capturing a hedonistic lifestyle characterised by excess, humour and indulgence. And the women’s equivalent, ‘ladettes’, were not far behind.

But as they hurtled towards the end of the century, the realities of lad culture took hold, with drink, drugs and bravado rearing their ugly heads. Lads’ mags were born, driving the pressure to compete with ‘sexy babes’ on the covers. The women who had felt empowered were now being asked to strip for the magazines.

Only Fools and Horses logo

The 1980s British sitcom Only Fools and Horses makes prolific use of the hand-written Mistral typeface as its eternally recognisable signature design theme. Roger Excoffon’s 1953 design can be seen in its logo, titles, credits and endless merchandise – taking advantage of its instant recognisability to capture the attention of the shows fans.

Ironically, in the West Coast of America gangster rappers NWA and their founder Eazy-E did the same with Mistral also!

My Wife Next Door – previously featured here on Fonts In Use – had been the first-ever winner of a dedicated BAFTA “Best Sitcom” award in 1973. The sequel to the mid-1960s sitcom The Likely Lads, Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads? was the second winner of that category in 1974. It premiered on 9th January 1973, half a century ago to the day on which this contribution is being compiled.

It was set in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, starring Rodney Bewes as Bob Ferris, James Bolam as Terry Collier, Brigit Forsyth as Thelma Ferris (née Chambers) and Sheila Fearn as Terry Collier’s sister Audrey, and had been created by Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais. It features one of the more memorable signature tunes of not only British sitcom history in particular but British television history in general, “Whatever Happened To You”, composed by the former drummer with Manfred Mann, Mike Hugg (Music) and Ian La Frenais (Lyrics), which, in late April 1973, actually made the UK Top Forty, performed by Highly Likely.

These titles are taken from that premier, entitled “Strangers On A Train”. They are rendered in Eden, a close follower of Burko Gorpo and/or Blippo Black, with “Signature Tune written by” set in Kabel.

Having recently had cause to mention Queen Margrethe II of Denmark at a post at the Fan Blog for Valérie Čižmárová, “Bananas For Breakfast”, my attention has been drawn to this documentary originally broadcast – to coincide with the state visit to the UK – on BBC Two on Sunday 28th April 1974, strangely under the banner of The World About Us, which was a natural history-related strand of documentaries on BBC Television created by Sir David Attenborough. The documentary was a co-production with Danmarks Radio, produced by Jeremy Bennett, who also did the interviewing of Queen Margrethe II, with Jørgen Bonfils as his associate producer, and was narrated by Jim Douglas-Henry.

The typeface used for the titles of the special edition is one previously featured at another contribution of mine, the “Sewing it in STYLE” article by Glynis Holland in The Sun’s Annual for Girls 1973 (which I note also has a Danish connection thanks to the fashion designer Margit Brandt) – Bookman Swash. Of particular note is the Danish “slashed O” character (Ø) in the name of the associate producer. Meanwhile, the typeface used for the series title, over the trademark “spinning rings”, is Helvetica.
