Risographed leaflets for an edition by artist Linda Brothwell, part of Linda’s wider collaborative project working with community gardeners. The leaflet instructs the user how to make a tea strainer kit and use it at home.

‘Tools for Tea’ began in Autumn 2021 when Linda started meeting with a group of community gardeners in Knowle West, Bristol to investigate what was growing in our common spaces that could be used for making herbal tea from. The group recognised the importance of tea making and drinking in coming together and showing care for each other.

Printed on G.F. Smith Candy Pink Colorplan. The titles are set in Patrona Grotesk Plain B by Matyáš Machat of Superior Type, body copy is in Maple by Process Type Foundry.

Smith & Lewarne is a collaborative graphic design and illustration practice based in the southwest of the UK with studios in Bristol and Plymouth. The practice was founded by Jono Lewarne (City Edition Studio) and Stephen Smith (Neasden Control Centre).

The design of the duo’s portfolio website is as colorful as the work it presents. Generous space between images and text prevents work and presentation from merging and overlapping.

The typography combines two contrasting fonts. In headlines, Shrill (Adrien Midzic) turns the dial to 11, while the low-contrast Mint Book (Sebastian Sanfilippo) provides balance in descriptions, subheaders and the menu. It is used in its Bold and Book styles, with occasional faux italics, as they were not yet available. Mint Book recently graduated from Future Fonts, with italics included. To differentiate from the portfolio, body copy text on the About pages is set with Newsreader from Production Type.

Artica Writings is a collection of essays on the theme of oceans, inspired by the UN’s Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, commissioned by Artica Svalbard:

We are very pleased to share a new printed version of the Artica Writings 2021 essay commissions.

Last year’s series looked to the ocean for inspiration, inviting writers, artists, poets and scientists to share their thoughts on our oceans. This limited edition publication has been designed by City Edition Studio, the book’s jacket is made from plastic recovered from the Andaman Sea in South East Asia, where fisherman are trained and paid to collect, sort, wash and shred plastic waste which is used to make book cloth.

The book is made from recycled paper and features a cloth wrap that is made from plastic recovered from the Andaman Sea. The typography reflects the sea’s depths by becoming darker as it gets further down the page through the use of variable font technology and JavaScript.

The body font is Capraia by Cast Foundry and the titles are set in Pyte Legacy Vulture by The Pyte Foundry.
