Born in Manchuria in 1938. Graduated from Tokyo University of Art in 1961 and then entered the design division of Takashimaya. Moved to Oakland in 1964 and attended the California College of Arts and Crafts for one year. Moved to New York where he graduated from Pratt Institute in 1965 and joined CBS News in the advertising and promotion department under Lou Dorfsman. Worked freelance from 1970 and established his own studio, Kiyoshi Kanai, Inc. in 1973. Clients include Citibank, IBM, Mobil, Swissair, American Craft magazine (1979–2007), and book publishers for whom he designed many jackets. Taught at Parsons.
