Studio Dumbar and Martens Kuipers have developed a new identity and website for American lamps and interior retailer Lumens.

Typefaces used are Niveau Grotesk from HvD Fonts, and Store Norske Tango from Skriftkompani.

Every year, the MTV VMAs (Video Music Awards) stake a claim as the ultimate anti-academy awards, with a colourful night of jaw-dropping performances watched by a vast global audience. From Britney’s serpentine co-star to Ye’s infamous interruption, headline-grabbing moments play a key role in VMAs folklore. The branding follows suit, with MTV’s archetypal, in-your-face attitude shouting louder than other awards. For 2022 and 2023, MTV invited Studio Dumbar/DEPT® to create a campaign identity encompassing motion design and social media visuals.

For the type, Studio Dumbar chose Signs (by Swiss foundry Maxitype)—a chunky, spirited typeface that communicates with clarity whether static or in motion—combined with Selecta for the informative text displayed in compact sizes.

OutSystems is a global leader in high-performance software development. NextStep is a conference by OutSystems that “brings visionary thinkers, top developer talent, and tech-progressive brands to address the most exciting topics defining the future through software.”

The animation-based visual identity of the 2022 edition was developed by Studio Dumbar together with the OutSystems branding team, using KTF Rublena and a yet unidentified sans serif.

Cumulus Park is a new district in Amsterdam’s southeast. The aim of this district is to drive collaborative innovation through the connection of several buildings in a kind of huge open-space. It’s a place that offers space to start-ups, scale-ups, corporates small and large, innovators and students to collaborate and innovate, mostly on the themes of urbanisation and digital identity.

Studio Dumbar was in charge of the visual identity and of the strategic positioning. Relying on the idea of Darwin’s “diversity breed”, in order to render the spirit of innovation thriving the district, Studio Dumbar designed a motion typeface – based on Fellix – where all its tiny components constantly redistribute to create new letters. This adaptation of letters to create new orders was made possible through a program specifically created for the project.

Besides this strong identity positioning, Studio Dumbar chose Media Sans from Production Type for casual text uses. Associated to their modular typeface, Media Sans gives an anchor to the gaze, and displays also a technical aspect reliable to digital innovation, through its square shapes and the short ascenders and descenders.

Commissioned by Studio Dumbar and the Hong-Ik University, Hangil E-type was designed in 2008/09 for the Latin names on the new bilingual and trilingual road signs in South Korea. While the normal style of Hangil E-type is already of narrow proportions to accomodate long place names, some very long words made an even more condensed version necessary. Still, we managed to keep the letterforms open, clear and legible to ensure good readability in the most demanding conditions.

The custom typeface was subsequently expanded and made available for general licensing from Bold Monday in 2010. The retail version is named Panno Sign and is accompanied by a version optimized for other use than signage, Panno Text.

In times of big brands requesting very similar looking custom typefaces (with far-fetched references) for their corporate identities, this may be a fresh take on how to stand out from your competitors with a set of shapes, colours and fonts that are easily accessible to anyone.

Following a repositioning of airline Transavia, Mirabeau and Studio Dumbar rolled out a complete overhaul of the Transavia identity & strategy: from name (used to be Transavia.com) and colour palette (used to be a patrol station-like green and yellow) to onboarding, conversion, livery, website, uniforms, the whole package.

In the new look everything seems lightweight, friendly, easy and screen-oriented. Even the planes look like they are web-only or mobile-first, with big clickable-button-like icons.

Together with the simple and strong palette of colours and shapes, Nexa is one of the rugs that ties the room together in every Transavia product. The wordmark is set in what looks like modified Nexa Bold, one of the free weights of a type family that started out as a freebie. Since its introduction in 2012, the family was fleshed out to include script and 'rust' styles. In the Transavia identity, the type palette is kept as simple as possible: only a few upright (roman) weights.

Creatie is a quarterly design and advertising magazine that adopts a new guest editor for each issue. When Studio Dumbar CEO Tom Dorresteijn was invited to edit their Autumn 2014 edition, he convinced the publishers to allow Studio Dumbar to take over the design. The result is a strongly typographic and colorful solution that relies heavily on the variety of widths from Comercial Type’s Druk series, paired with ITC Cheltenham for ledes and body text.

The design scheme was also incorporated in motion graphics for the issue’s launch event.

For more than 20 years Items has been The Netherlands’ leading magazine on design, craft, architecture and the visual arts. Prompted by an evolving editorial formula, BIS Publishers Amsterdam selected Studio Dumbar to create a new concept for the magazine.

Our approach led to a sharper distinction between regular elements and topical features. We increased the visual impact and editorial significance of imagery, providing space for featured projects to shine. We also gave the magazine an added function as a showcase for new graphic design by introducing new fonts for lead features. Created by Dutch type designers, many of the fonts weren’t commercially available at the time of going to press, maintaining Items’ reputation for showcasing the finest in cutting edge creativity.

The primary typeface is Collis, a rare gem from TEFF. The logo appears to be based on Berthold Caslon Book, with a custom ligature.
