Westerly is a literary magazine that has been produced at the University of Western Australia since 1956. It currently publishes two issues a year, releasing its first online special issues in 2016. The journal maintains a specific focus on the Australian and Asian regions, but has published literary and cultural content from international authors. The magazine publishes fiction, poetry, cultural, autobiographic, and scholarly essays, and interviews.

Since the 2016 redesign, all typography uses Laski Slab. From the Chil3 website:

The brief: Refresh the design for well-loved 60-year-old literary magazine.
The solution: A new typeface to reduce the word count and e-pub versions bring the magazine up-to-date.

“The brief and develop, design and produce a catalogue to accompany an exhibition [at the Fremantle Arts Centre in Western Australia]. With a pre-set format we developed this exhibition catalogue for renowned illustrator, author and Oscar winner, Shaun Tan. Less known for paintings of his local environment, while growing up in Perth and then Melbourne, this exhibition explores his view on suburban life. A strict grid structure gave the works space to breath. This project was the first to use the new typeface Fenland.”

The World’s Fastest E-Type Jaguar. The Quest for the Record

A book designed and published to commemorate a father and son's ambitious goal to drive a Jaguar E-Type faster than anyone else at the Lake Gairdner salt flats in South Australia during the annual speed trials.

The brief was to develop the book design and production of Perth’s Presbyterian Ladies’ College (PLC) centenary book, written by author and journalist, Susan Maushart. The design of this book should break the norms of school history books, be brave bold and modern.

We worked closely with the client, UWA Publishing, and the author to bring this beautifully rich (and at times very amusing) history to life. Although this book has a fairly formal structure in terms of its 11 chapters, every page engages the viewer with different standout images, stories and factoids. The spirit of camaraderie, innovation and achievement are strong elements throughout the book in line with PLC’s 100 year history.

Scope: Book design and production of 416pp quarter bound with tartan marker ribbon. The typeface used throughoiut the book is Laski Slab, designed by Paula Mastrangelo and Ramiro Espinoza and released with ReType in 2014.
