Invited for an artistic residency, Lausanne's Daniel Ruggiero brought along the works of Vaud state artists for an exhibition based on urban culture. He had given carte blanche to his friends, some of the finest names on the contemporary scene, such as Sandrine Pelletier, Denis Rouèche, Elise Gagnebin-de Bons, Eric Martinet, Balmer Hählen, all artists, designers and tattoo artists, to customize a skateboard for him.

It is one of the first uses of the Rotaitalic style of Angela typeface (recently updated with new weight and italic styles). Smaller text is set in another typeface from Newglyph: Antarctica. The typeface used for Japanese text is Toppan Bunkyu Midashi Gothic.

The Never Taken Images documents a unique long-term project that Swiss photographers Françoise and Daniel Cartier have been pursuing since 1998. They have put together a vast collection of unfixed photographic papers, glass negatives, and films, mostly dating from 1880 to 1990. Samples of these are mounted and displayed, and, over the course of several exhibitions, exposed to light, causing them to evolve towards color saturation. Instead of looking at still images, the Cartiers’ installations, titled Wait and See, allow viewers to perceive a kind of reality for themselves.

This book features the entire test catalog that the Cartiers have put together to date, showing some 900 different papers and photosensitive supports. These facsimiles offer an almost real impression of their formats, colors, and materiality. Essays by photo historian and curator Kathrin Schönegg and scholar of art history and critic Thilo Koenig supplement the images and place the Wait and See project in the art historical and technological context of abstract media art. The Never Taken Images also celebrates the industrially manufactured photosensitive support, representing the centrality of the long pre-digital period in the history of photography.

The exhibition showing the results of the Tokyo TDC Annual Awards 2022 started April 1st at Ginza Graphic Gallery, Tokyo.

Balmer Hählen has been invited to be member of the jury for the international graphic design competition and to select 11 prize-winners and 77 nominees among 3,644 entries. They realized the poster, windows and several communication materials.

They used the Antarctica typeface from newglyph for the informational texts. The slanted Japanese typeface is unidentified.

The poster seeks to enter into dialogue with the picture. Indeed, the photography represents from a subjective point of view a messy room. The message of the poster wants to organize it, telling the protagonist of this mess to clean up and then sit down. The strict and orderly tone of the poster goes in opposition with the photo and creates an opposing diptych, both opposed, but complementary. — Balmer Hählen

The exhibition Swiss Graphic Design is presented by the Embassy of Switzerland in Ukraine (Посольство Швейцарії в Україні). Designers Balmer Hählen were invited by design master Werner Jeker to show their posters together with two special guests, the Ukrainian graphic designers Mykola Kolavenko and Dmytro Bulanov.

Swiss designers Balmer Hählen were in charge of the invitation for Rendez-vous des créateurs. They won the TDC Prize of the Tokyo TDC Annual Awards 2018 with this project.

For the 2017 invitation, printing takes surprising forms and pushes the limits of technology. She defies all rules and enjoys it, going so far as to tamper with paper to bring a new dimension to the object. Balmer Hählen designed this invitation with a starting idea: What’s going on if the impression took over the graphic design? Thus cut-outs, textures, glossy varnish and hot printed matter takes over and modify the typography. The materials confront each other to offer a perfect alchemy. The contrasts sublime by opposing their textures. The shiny effects reveal their luminosity by imposing itself on matte papers. — Balmer Hählen

The open doors 2016 of the neighborhood called “La Cité” is an event that takes place in the old town of Lausanne in Switzerland. To climb to the “Cité”, you must brave the one hundred and seventy-seven steps of a staircase. A strong symbol of this neighborhood. The stairs in the poster interact and mingle with typography in a structured and architectural way. The main text enhanced with a varnish highlights the name of the event. — Balmer Hählen

Invitation book, save-the-date flyer and poster designed by the Lausanne-based duo A3 Studio for the 2015 edition of the Rendez-vous des créateurs event. The grid used on the project was inspired by La Chaux-de-Fonds’ gridded city architecture.

Design Days is an annual cultural event that provides a platform for contemporary design in all its forms. It presents original exhibitions and brings together a very particular architecture selection of Swiss and international designers, editors and retailers of contemporary furniture.

Stanley, by Ludovic Balland, is used throughout the poster for the 2014 edition. The “Poster” cut with its characteristic sharp and graphic serifs and the special design of the capitals gives a unique tone to the poster.
