Cloakroom magazine is making good use of their pretty subtle yet solid custom typeface Cloakroom by Alaric Garnier, who also designed the magazine masthead. His type is smartly combined with Kleukens-Egyptienne FSL (Reymund Schroeder) from Forgotten Shapes. Art direction and design by London-based design studio B.A.M. (founded in 2014 by David McKendrick and Lee Belcher).

Proto Grotesk (Production Type) is the typeface chosen for the redesign of Christie’s Magazine. Published six times a year, the magazine is the centerpiece of the editorial output by the British auction house.

It contains an inspiring edit of culture, collecting and luxury by leading writers, photographers and tastemakers, uncovers the personalities behind the greatest art and provides a comprehensive look at highlights from our upcoming auction seasons and Private Sales. The magazine is delivered to Christie’s most important clients around the world.

Five years after they first worked on Christie’s Magazine, London-based studio B.A.M. again was in charge of the redesign.

For the September-October issue of Christie’s Magazine we’ve refreshed our look and feel. A bold new cover design, revamped typography and an expanded auction highlights section are now presented in an even more elegant format — changes that are all geared to expanding and enriching the conversation with like-minded art lovers.

A custom version of Proto Grotesk is used throughout. To enrich the stylistic palette of the editorial design, the family was expanded to include italics.

French photographer Maxime Ballesteros captures honest moments in our everyday existence, in a world where sexual freedom and exploration is becoming celebrated and commonplace. He sees those moments of life liberated and displays it to us so we can marvel over the beautiful aspects of life we have left unnoticed. Perhaps it is for this reason that so many of Maxime’s images glimpse at only a fraction of a scene – the exquisite detail of a pair of legs bound in suspenders or the intimate closeness of bodies in a bath. His debut book Maxime Ballesteros, Les Absents has been designed by London-based studio B.A.M. Cover titles and chapter openings are set with Suisse Works, combined with a Regular weight of NewPanam Skyline for captions and bilinguals texts.

For White Cube, the gallery home to contemporary artists such as Gilbert & George, Damien Hirst and Andreas Gursky, a complete new visual identity and rebrand was designed by B.A.M. Everything from invites and signage through to website and marketing communications has been reimagined. The new graphic identity embraces the migration of a print-based to a digital-first identity.

Following the gallery's credo and name, the visual identity remains discrete, with a simple and elegant typographic treatment based on Beausite customized for the identity by Fatype. The different levels of contrast of the typeface – including the contrastless Beausite Classic – allow for a coherent, flexible and subtle graphic system to be deployed in all the mediums.

The work of Brazilian painter and collage artist Beatriz Milhazes treads a fine line between the cerebral (and occasionally even visually austere) impulses of modernism, and the untutored, celebratory, colour-saturated excess of folk art as it spills in the direction of carnival. This new show, the first in London for a decade, brings together paintings, collage, sculpture, and a giant tapestry, 16m across, made at the Aubusson factory in France. — The Independent

The redesign of Christie's Magazine was B.A.M.’s first commission back in 2014. B.A.M. is a joint venture between David McKendrick & Lee Belcher. After leaving their respective jobs at Esquire and Wallpaper* they worked for six weeks intensively on the new version of the magazine:

“We had to be on it 24/7, from leaving Esquire and Wallpaper* on a Friday and hitting the ground running on the Monday with the redesign. It was also our first job as B.A.M. so it had to be up to scratch.” [David Mckendrick talking with Rob Alderson]

They found inspiration by digging deeply into the auction house’s archive, which dates back to 1766:

“There were a few things we stole, I mean paid homage to,” David explained, such as a “confident use of multiple typefaces.” [It’s Nice That]

Indeed, the type palette is composed of several styles of ITC Cheltenham and the Commercial Type duo Lyon (designed by Kai Bernau) and Atlas Grotesk (designed by Carvalho Bernau & Christian Schwartz) as workhorse typefaces. The palette is completed by a display typeface conveying a retro feel, subject to change for every new issue. The first issue was using Acier, in all its superb glory!

This winter, Somerset House is proud to present North: Fashioning Identity, an exhibition examining representations of the north of England and Northerners in photography, fashion and art.

North: Fashioning Identity features over 100 photographs, fashion garments and artworks from a host of renowned photographers, designers and artists including Alasdair McLellan, Corinne Day, Mark Leckey, Jeremy Deller, Raf Simons, Paul Smith, Off White’s Virgil Abloh, Peter Saville, Stephen Jones, Gareth Pugh, Nick Knight, Glen Luchford, Jamie Hawkesworth and David Sims, plus the likes of Shirley Baker, John Bulmer and Peter Mitchell.
