British foundry with roots that go back to Caxton in the 15th century. The name comes from founders John Stephenson and James Blake who established the company in Sheffield in 1818 and then purchased William Caslon IV’s foundry.
Initially named Blake, Garnett & Co. Between 1820 and 1830 the firm’s name was changed to Blake and Stephenson and in 1841 became Stephenson Blake & Co. [Dowding 1998]
By the 1950s, Stephenson Blake, & Co. Ltd. had absorbed most of the UK’s typefounders, including Caslon, Fry’s, Fann Street, Reed & Fox, and Miller & Richard.
