Theresa Babb: Camden (1898–1901) delves in the captivating yet overlooked work of Theresa Babb (1868–1948), an American pioneer photographer whose oeuvre, though freely available, has long languished unnoticed in the depths of the public domain.

Independently funded and free from profit motives, the catalogue, designed and compiled in 2024 by Boris Andreev and Alessandro Kanina, is a labor of love dedicated to honoring Babb’s extraordinary contributions. Accompanied by self-authored essays in both German and English and boasting high-quality design and typographic craftsmanship, this curated release is poised to captivate a diverse audience, inviting them to marvel at her ingenuity and the transformative era she immortalized.

Babb’s unparalleled command over light, shadow, and composition doesn’t just echo the seismic shifts in late Victorian and Edwardian photography—laying bare the hurdles and triumphs that upended the art form—it also lends her work a timeless edge that stitches yesterday and today. But maybe even more impactfully, her work unravels the shifting tides and increasing agency of women at the cusp of the 20th century, rendering it exceptionally resonant in today’s push for gender parity.

In curating this catalogue, we seek to foster a deep appreciation for Theresa Babb's work and to ensure her story endures. We invite readers to feel the historical weight and joy embedded in each photograph, and to stand with us in preserving her legacy in photography and feminist discourse for future generations.

The catalogue was primarily designed using the newly released Snaga by the independent Berlin-based type foundry Lettersoup (founded by Botio Nikoltchev in 2014) in collaboration with Trifon Andreev (an independent type designer, Cyrillic consultant, and researcher). IBM Plex Mono was incorporated as a complementary typeface, adding a nuanced typographic pairing that heightened the overall elegance and visual depth of the catalogue.

Although a picture may be worth a thousand words, in this case there was no better way to symbolize Begoña and Justin’s relationship than through their own words. After three years of written correspondence, we decided to select the words that represent them best. Although they are the main characters, the words – which have accompanied them so much during these years – appear in the background, printed in white on a white paper. In this way the story of Begoña and Justin is proposed as a suggestion to the reader. An invitation, not only to one of the most important days of their lives, but also to get to know them more deeply.

The words, the names and also the mongram for the sealing wax are set in Inferi, with Quasimoda used for the addresses.

Laura Roebuck – Paintings 2009–2019 is a monograph that looks back at 10 years of work by the Californian artist. The publication was designed by Ellen M. Roebuck using the Quasimoda typeface. From Laura Roebuck’s website:

The catalog is 8½×10¼″, 48 pages with 37 color plates, foil stamped cover, translucent flysheet, and a fold-out center spread. Printed in Los Angeles on digital and litho presses on Mohawk Superfine paperstock with eggshell and smooth finishes.

Studio Carbon were tasked to help bring to life a new store concept from naming, logo, signage, menus, instore communication and digital design direction.

Their first step was to develop the name for the Romeo family’s brand new luxury European inspired grocer and restaurant in the heart of Sydney’s Central business district.

The Romeo family have been supplying and supporting the local communities of Australia for generations through their chain of IGA stores, so it seemed fitting to celebrate this community mindedness with their latest venture but with an Italian twist honouring their heritage. We brainstormed many names, but “Locali” which means “locals” in Italian, was the perfect choice.

The Locali vibe is brought to life with a wall mural of a Tuscan village as you enter and leave the store. The visual language is supported by a custom logo with a timeless signage solution that harmonises with the built environment. The result feels uncluttered and refined, evoking a sense of the European passion for quality. To really make you feel like you’re one of the ‘locali’, the signage is in Italian.

Locali is the pinnacle of decades of experience for the Romoe family in the food industry. Their love and passion has now been bought to life in this beautiful store and restaurant.

The Guyliner is a blog by freelance journalist and author Justin Myers, who is a superfan of the Guardian’s Blind Date column.

The Guyliner logo and site was designed by Paul Lang at The Pop Group. Paul chose IvyPresto for logo and headlines, IvyJournal for text, and Quasimoda for navigation.

With her poetic picture books and play-books, Tom Seidmann-Freud has made an outstanding contribution to the modernization of the language, design and form in the children's books of the early 20th century.

Studio-stg redesigned and republished the wonderful ABC book called Hurra wir lesen! Hurra wir schreiben! (“Hurray we read! Hurray we write!”). The book was originally written and illustrated by Tom Seidmann-Freud (a niece to Sigmund Freud) in 1930.

The Labelmaker:

Quantum is the top-selling wine brand by Domaine Boyar. The company needed a fresh eye-catching wine label design and I was commissioned to create it. The old look of the wines was already out of time, so I was very sure they would need something completely new to continue with good sales.

I kept the brand name and the classic tapered bottle as a foundation of my new project and started dreaming of an amazing eye-catching wine label design. It was really easy and fun brainstorming with a mighty word like Quantum so I did more than five inspiring proposals based on different ideas. Luckily the one I liked the most was my client’s favorite design, too.

I created a very large label to cover most of the bottle with paper. I picked — like in many other projects of mine — the Snow Country paper by Arconvert for its very delicate texture, matt finish and excellent performance in different climate conditions.

The focal point of the label is an artistic modern letter Q stamped with different colors of hot foil, depending on whether the wine is white, red, or rose. The letter measures some 4 cm in height, so it’s really huge. The reflections of the hot foil are so tasty when you rotate the bottle in your hands that everyone is enchanted by this eye-catching wine label design.

I also created a linear pattern from the top right corner of the label towards the letter Q because I wanted somehow to concentrate more details, attention and even more energy around it. On the other hand, I did not want to make too much visual noise as I was looking for an elegant and clean look, so I decided to print these lines with transparent varnish. I like playing with varnish. Raised varnish gives very gentle reflections in different light conditions without changing dramatically the overall appearance of the artwork.

Having started with a typographic key element, I wanted to keep a very simple and good typography for the rest of the label. The bottom half holds the brand and a short message explaining the essence behind the Quantum name. I made a simple left-aligned composition of heading and body text using one of my favorite sans-serif font families – Quasimoda Pro by Lettersoup. I like using this family on my wine labels because it’s one of the best modern typefaces that can give you a clean, contemporary and legible look of your texts, and if needed, you can pick from a range of weights.

At the very bottom of this modern eye-catching wine label design I signed ‘Domaine Boyar’ using handwriting and stamped it with hot foil. I also tried to somehow match the color of the capsule with the color of the hot foil because I wanted to enhance the meaning of color scheme in the whole packaging.

As a result, from all my efforts I created a very modern and minimal-looking eye-catching wine label design where the play with different print processes along with good paper choice are almost everything that this packaging will need to shine among the others on the shelf.

The Union of Bulgarian Artists (UBA) is a non-profit association of professional artists and art critics which can trace its routes back to 1893. Their newsletter edition 02/2018 uses Vocal for the typography.

Boyan Manchev is philosopher, Professor at the New Bulgarian University and at Universität der Künste (Berlin), Guest Professor at the Hollins University and Sofia University. He is also former Director of Program and Vice-President of the International College of Philosophy in Paris. Manchev has lectured widely at European, Asian and North-American universities and cultural institutions.

Adasoffice in Switzerland made a remarkable design for “Who’s Johnny Cash?”, a multimedial and musical evening about Johnny Cash with Manuel Kuehne, Gisela Nyfeler, Adrian Perez, Florian Steiner, Christov Rolla & Miss Tigre and Tevfik Kuyas, Urs Müller and Arno Troxler, loosely based on Reinhard Kleist’s graphic novel Cash — I see a darkness.

For the Staro Oryahovo wines, The Labelmaker designed “a very memorable label with iconic tree and a special embossed wavy texture making the ordinary paper look like a very special custom one.
