The font Epoque Black was used on the cover and in the interior of this “Practical and Nutritious Recipes Guide” published by the nutrition cell of the Department of Health and Social Assistance of ALECE. In addition to being used on the cover with a stylized capital S, the font was used in the interior in the Bold weight for the titles. The text typeface is PT Sans.

This poster series for music events with different acts in various bars in Castanhal, Brazil, uses a combination of vibrant colors, paired with large, stylized text to capture the audience's attention.

A large cartoon-style character which appears to be a stuffed toy bird, features prominently on each poster. Centered against an urban backdrop, it contributes to a striking, surrealist visual aesthetic. The graphic designer(s) blended digital techniques, using flat colors and strong contrasts, without resorting to realistic shading or textures, reinforcing the pop and alternative approach of the designs.

Epoque Black was used as the main typeface. With an art nouveau-inspired aesthetic, heavy strokes, and semi-condensed sans-serif shapes, it provides a strong and immediate visual presence – essential for music posters, where the main message needs to be grasped quickly.

Secondary information, such as dates, times, and locations is set in Myriad. Its clean, legible style ensures easy readability even at smaller sizes, complementing the visual impact of Époque without competing with it.

Japanese elements reinforce a counterculture aesthetic, with references to the worlds of video games, cyberpunk, and experimental music. This visual touch speaks directly to the underground spirit of the events. The typeface used for Japansese text is yet unidentified.

In commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the first Brazilian Constitution, the Memorial of the Legislative Assembly of the State of Ceará Deputy Pontes Neto (Malce) opens the short-term exhibition Da Imposição à Cidadania – 1824 a 2024: Dois Séculos de Lutas e de Conquistas (“From Imposition to Citizenship – 1824 to 2024: Two Centuries of Struggles and Achievements”).

Olhar Film Festival is a festival in Santarém, Brazil, curated with a focus on regional production. The Festival Amazônida de Cinema Internacional e Itinerante returned in February 2023. Epoque is used for the visual identity, a typeface that was born in the Amazon region. In the logo, it can be seen with some of its alternate gylphs. Epoque is supported by Acumin Condensed.

Digital corner store and delivery service Foxtrot have partnered with Chicago’s artisanal cocktail bar The Violet Hour to devise a whisky blend of Kentucky straight bourbon. Tasking Milwaukee-based multi-disciplinary creative Jim Kennelly to help tell their story, the resulting identity is one referential to The Violet Hour’s pre-prohibition-style attitude to whisky, while being fundamentally celebratory of the liquor’s hometown of Chicago.

Finding its graphic voice through vintage printed materials, such as newspapers and liquor labels, Kennelly’s typographically-led identity and bottle design demonstrates creative strength in the nonchalance of its aesthetic. Combining characterful illustration and tender typography to create something both familiar and visually distinct.

Discussing the influence from vintage newspapers, Kennelly tells us that knowing the solution was going to be typographically focused, “we had to create a look that allowed us to give consumers multiple points of information as quickly as possible,” Kennelly explains. “We immediately were drawn to the idea of treating this as a sort of tabloid,” he adds, “using headlines and visual hierarchy to tell consumers what they need to know through an editorial format,” noting the aesthetic reference to America’s prohibition era.

With this in mind, Kennelly opted for Epoque Black as the primary typeface alongside Agipo Bold Condensed for the secondary headlines, with the editorial-esque construction of both lending themselves to the overarching chosen aesthetic.

Epoque Roman and Bold were used extensively as the base font on the packaging of the Collection Particulièr by Bonnat Chocolate. Three limited edition flavors of fine chocolate – Dos Cielos, Kuna Balam and Les Sirènes – were released in October 2021: “A limited edition of chocolates made from cocoas, which in spite of their rarity, can be considered collectible beans.”

The typeface has been present on the brand’s social networks from then on, in combination with the brand’s luscious lettering and illustrations. It is interesting to note that the alternate forms for both the A and also the E were used on the back of the packaging in the middle part (see last image).

After releasing their first video clip at the beginning of the semester, the band DeadNow continued to use Epoque Black in a creative and unorthodox way in several of their actions on their Instagram account. All this in order to prepare the ground for the release of their new single “Die Again”.

Malaco Dreams is an audiovisual production company located in Castanhal, Pará, Brazil. It emerged as a way to finance the musical productions of its creators who also have a progressive rock band.

A recently launched video clip by the band DeadNow presents the Malaco Dreams animated visual signature. It uses the typeface Epoque Black for the word “Dreams”. (“Malaco” is custom lettering.)

Art Nouveau is a book about the international style of art, architecture, and applied art, edited by art historian Uta Hasekamp. The book was published by Könemann in a multilingual edition, with texts in English, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, and Dutch.

While the hardcover edition (2018) had Arnold Böcklin – the typographic synonym for Art Nouveau – on the cover, the design of the paperback version (2019) went with something that is less predictable and still appropriate: Epoque is a contemporary typeface inspired by the typography of the 1890s to 1910s, designed by Rafael Ferreira and released by Rafaeiro Typeiro in 2018. Epoque is used in all caps, with several of its many alternate glyphs, including the asymmetrical A, the “kicking” R, the descending T, and the staircase E.
