Exhibition catalog for Transmergence #04, held at FRAC Alsace, France (translated by the contributor):

Transmergence#04 is an exhibition format developed by FRAC Alsace, which showcases the regional and cross-border art scene while questioning its definition in the face of a globalised world with increased mobility, where time takes the place of geographical distance.

For the fourth consecutive year, FRAC Alsace’s Transmergence format is part of La Regionale, a unique cross-border project bringing together 18 institutions from three countries (Switzerland, Germany and France).

For Transmergence #04, the curators have selected artistic proposals that create a dialogue between art and craftsmanship. The exhibition presents works and new productions by artists of diverse origins who now live or work in the cross-border region.

The catalog is bilingual (French/German) and is printed in four colors with a spot color. French text is printed in black while German text is printed in a Pantone silver.
Thomas Leblond and Audrey Ohlman did the graphic design with EB Ackerhof ​​​​​​ from Électro-bibliothèque. Transmergence #04 was published by Pétrole and FRAC Alsace.

Archive #1, “Streets” highlights the archives of skate photographer Bertrand Trichet around the globe, from 2007 to 2012. It features Charly Young, Dan Pensyl, Deshi, Hjalte Halberg, Jan Kliewer, Jerome Campbell, Jussi Toropainen, Michal Juras, Phil Zwijsen, Pontus Alv, Robert Smith, Tao Willy Akers and Paul Rodrigues. It was published at the occasion of the exhibition at Université de Picardie Jules Verne – La Citadelle, from 15th September to 12th October 2023.

The graphic design was made by Jad Hussein, using the typeface EB Ackerhof.

Instruments describe themselves as:

[…] a collaborative platform indexing and releasing essential tools for outdoor activities. Through Instruments, we plan on releasing more objects and ideas, like trail food that’s not gel, a headlamp that can fit many devices, reusable ziplocs or a mountain spring restoration workshop. These aren’t quite firm commitments yet, but you get the idea.

For their visual identity, Paris-based studio Building Paris chose EB Ackerhof from Électro-bibliothèque for its ‘essential’ nature: a strict grid allows the drawing of each letter to be reduced to its essential form.

For two private dinners hosted by Gomi in Paris, Studio Hudson Catty developed the visual identity and designed menus, invitations, and related printed materials. In line with the surrealistic concept of the event, the studio chose translucent paper, enabling guests to perceive subsequent courses through each successive page of the menu.

The publication Der Prozess ist der Parcours – Wie Antworten über Fragen staunen oder wie Spiele Wissen infrage stellen (“The process is the course”) is a publication and documentation of my Master project made at Burg Giebichenstein Kunsthochschule Halle. It captures the process of the exhibition and the multimedia and participatory exploration of curiosity. It is about the potential, the downsides and the promotion of curiosity. It is an attempt to spatially represent this driving force, allowing for mishaps that enable moments of critical self-reflection and knowledge production, and methods that stimulate curiosity. In particular, it focuses on playing, questioning, establishing connections and moments of irritation.

The softcover publication has 128 pages and measures 125×185 mm. It comes with a silver scratch-off sticker and changing papers.

C'est juste un livre (“It’s just a book”) was produced for the 14th Puces Typo, held on Saturday 25 May 2024 at the Campus Fonderie de l’Image in Bagnolet.

This publishing project prefigures Un livre est, a collection of quotations about the book object to be published by Électro-bibliothèque.

These extracts, most of them very short, are taken from a range of publications, both old and new, and provide a map of this everyday object from a number of angles: authorial, conceptual, editorial and material.

C'est juste un livre is typeset with typefaces from the Électro-bibliothèque catalogue, including such that are already released, like EB Trainer Grotesk, EB Reklame and EB Ackerhof (not shown), the proprietary Haut-Bailly, as well as such that are in preparation, like EB Hymne.

Graphic designer Magali Brueder designed this T-shirt, “Gouache before Men”, typeset in EB Reklame, for La Mousse Éditions, her publishing house “interested in the sensitivity of a line, the expression of a commitment, and contemporary narratives”.

During a residency in 2021, Letizia Romanini decided to walk the 356 km separating her small country (Luxemburg) from France, Belgium and Germany, questioning the closure of borders and the notion of isolation. During this 24-day journey, she photographed and collected elements of the landscape to build up her own library of findings, marking a breach from her usual artistic practice.

Her work highlights the process of creation and the importance of discovery, reflecting an attentive and sensitive approach to her environment. The EVONYME edition extends this adventure through objects borrowed from the territory and transposed into jewelry, offering the possibility of wearing a fragment of the landscape.

In order to welcome those precious jewelries, we, at ramel·luzoir, designed a custom sized box in collaboration with the Alsatian box manufacturer Cartonnages Siegwald, using Fedrigoni's Materica pulp coloured paper and a white printed version of EB Reklame, designed by Clément Le Tulle-Neyret and distributed by Électro-bibliothèque.

The edition was first presented at the occasion of Plus d'épines que de roses, Letizia's solo show at the gallery Reuter Baush in Luxemburg City in October 2024.

Letizia also released 356 as part of this project – a book published by Pétrole Éditions, where Thomas Leblond (Électro-bibliothèque) contributes as member.

Atelier Tout va bien used EB Ackerhof for the logo and identity of Les Ateliers Vortex, an art center in Dijon, France. This fake monospace allows Tout va bien to play with the idea of fixed-width letters to create text-based images, while maintaining a strong identity when the Les Ateliers Vortex staff have to typeset small printed documents.

The typeface was designed by Clément Le Tulle-Neyret and released by Électro-bibliothèque. Atelier Tout va bien requested a custom version for the logotype.

Graphic Cultures of Dissent / Cultures graphiques de la contestation is the result of three years’ research devoted to the artistic, militant and counter-cultural printed matter from the 1960s and 1970s.

Initiated in 2021 by Nicolas Liucci-Goutnikov, Mica Gherghescu and Thomas Bertail, this research project’s aim is to promote the artistic, activist and counter-cultural ephemera of the 1960s and 1970s held by the Kandinsky Library. Published by the Centre Pompidou and the Outset Contemporary Art Fund, it is the result of collaboration between international partners: Stuart Hall at INIVA in London, the Paris 8 University Vincennes-Saint-Denis, the Beaux-arts de Paris, La Contemporaine, the Freedom Archives in San Francisco and the Center for the Study of Political Graphics in Los Angeles (CSPG).

At the same time, the project has enabled an educational programme to be set up for students from the Paris Beaux-Arts and the University of Paris 8 | Vincennes – Saint-Denis, encouraging them to appropriate this heritage in order to breathe new life into the critical force of ephemera. Through creative and collaborative workshops involving students and their teachers, this approach has encouraged an active and contemporary exploration of these sources.

One of the main design challenge was to reflect the aesthetics of the militant publications of the 1968s without compromising the legibility of the content, the documentation of the archive or the coherence of the publication. The aim was to bring out in places the characteristic expressiveness of the Free Press press without lapsing into pastiche.
This balance between functionalism and extravagance is reflected in the typographic choices made, with the use of EB Trainer by Antoine Elsensohn and Times Dot by Laurel Schwulst.

Opened in 2005, La Cartonnerie is a contemporary music venue in Reims, France, comprising three stage areas and six rehearsal studios. With the “Scène des musiques actuelles – SMAC” label, it offers concerts, artistic support, workshops, youth programmes, exhibitions and is behind the Elektricity and La Magnifique Society festivals, as well as summer highlights such as JUMP!

During 2023 and 2024 the venue made heavy use of Font Spectrum’s Purple Haze typeface. The in-house designer Lucie Pochet at La Cartonnerie works with the Paris-based Aletheia Aagency, a collaborative design practice of Anthony Vernerey and Hugo Dumont. Each of the seasons is introduced by one of their animations. Purple Haze is supported by Électro-bibliothèque’s EB Trainer Grotesk.

Special issue no. 37 of L’Architecture d’Aujourd’hui (“The Architecture of Today”), a French magazine, dedicated to the Carré Sénart.

The Westfield Carré Sénart shopping center is a shopping and leisure center in southeastern Paris, located in the Carré Sénart business park, in the municipalities of Lieusaint (Seine-et-Marne) and Saint-Pierre-du-Perray (Essonne). It was the first shopping center in France to be awarded the “Four Star” label in March 2012.

Terre Augmentée (Augmented Earth) is a realistic fiction project inspired by nature, highlighting the interdependence of living beings, using two layout principles. The first involves a system of layers to build and deconstruct the layout. The second principle offers a free reading path, with the narration unfolding through page references, in the same way as browsing the Internet is done from link to link. This experimental book is part of a research project into the concept of the ecosystem book, made at ESAG Penninghen.

For Maryse Quinton's book Habiter autrement, Dune Lunel Studio chose EB Trainer Grotesk distributed by Électro-bibliothèque for a display use but also for a deck use. The accompanying serif is Boogy Brut by Bureau Brut.

The Gentlewoman is a magazine aimed at modern women of style and purpose. It focuses on personal or even idiosyncratic style how women actually look, think and dress and on those women the magazine considers to be inspirational.

Art director Florine Bonaventure chose EB Trainer Grotesk distributed by Électro-bibliothèque for the 26th issue, which features model Ísadóra Bjarkardóttir Barney, Björk’s and Matthew Barney’s daughter.

Booklets made for Lafayette Anticipations:

During the exhibition Tumultes à Higienópolis by artist Katinka Bock, four editorial workshops were organised at Lafayette Anticipations, curated by Clara Schulmann and Thomas Boutoux, around the transformation of the city and the following themes: orality, observation, ecology and physicality, governmentality.

Each workshop resulted in the printing of a “journal” produced and printed on site within twenty-four hours of the workshop. The book, composed of these four issues, is completed with original engravings made from images by several artists invited by Katinka Bock. The sheets, in different formats, are based on the formats of international newspapers in reference to the initial activity of the Anzeiger-Hochhaus in Hanover. This emblematic publishing house saw the birth of such important periodicals as Der Stern and Der Spiegel in its basement.

Rex is an album by French pop/chanson artist Perez. Spassky Fischer designed the artwork, re-using the artwork of Perez’ previous album Surex. For the typography, the designers used EB Trainer Grotesk by Antoine Elsensohn.

For more than 30 years, L’ARP (Société civile des Auteurs Réalisateurs Producteurs) organizes the annual Rencontres Cinématographiques to bring together nearly 500 French and European professionals for political and artistic debates, preview screenings, and to discuss current affairs and the future of cinema and audiovisual industries. For the third year in a row, the event was held in Le Touquet-Paris-Plage in northern France.
