The 1919 Workers Collective is an activist group with the goal of “developing workers’ solidarity and building a workers’ movement in Winnipeg, MB”.

In 2023, the 1919 Workers Collective commissioned me to expand their logo into a custom font. Demur is the resulting bespoke typeface, which was released to the public free of charge in August 2024. Ingrid Doell, a member of the collective, clarified their new branding design uses a combination of Demur and Rubik, the latter of which is available on Google Fonts.

Vengeance of The Black Donnellys is the fictional sequel to Thomas P. Kelley’s 1954 account of the Donnelly tragedy.

Canada’s most feared family strikes back from the grave

This paperback edition was published by Harlequin in 1962, with Bern Smith’s cover art depicting a fiddling ghost rider followed by a crow.

The interlocking yellow caps appear to be from Toronado Interlock (or a precursor?). With the exception of the S and a few stroke endings (which might have been modified, or available in alternates), they match a showing in a 1969 Lettergraphics specimen. Eric Nathan Robertson (born in 1948 in Scotland) is an award-winning composer, organist, pianist, and record producer who is currently living in Canada. His work spans many composed film scores and music for television series in both Canada and the United States.

This album was released both under the titles Piano Hits and Magic Melodies, first by Silver Eagle Records in 1982 and subsequently also by K-tel. The back of some K-tel releases credits the cover design to Paul Weldon, a Toronto musician, architect and graphic designer whose works spanned over 30 years, including the cover of Funkadelic’s America Eats Its Young. It’s a typographical party.

Stilla by François Boltana is used for the artist's name. The track names are shown in Times New Roman (“Chariots of Fire”, “One Golden Pond”, “Endless Love”); a modified Eckmann-Schrift with swashes on t and e (“The Rose”); Letraset's Bookman Bold Condensed, a condensed width of Bookman Swash AKA “Sixties Bookman” (“Musicbox Dancer”); Graphis AKA Barnyard Extra Bold (“The Homecoming”); Slogan (“American Gigolo”) Cooper Black with italics on numerals (“9 to 5”); and a rotated line of Kalligraphia (“Fame”), with ITC Avant Garde Gothic for the small text.

Les Louis Boys are an iconic Franco-Manitoban music group formed in 1972 in Winnipeg. It has played countless times at the Festival du Voyageur. Two albums were recorded by the now-defunct Century 21 Studios.

The past and current members are Edwin Prince, Gabriel “Moose” Masse, Michel “Butch” Boucher, Marcel Vernier, Paul Belanger, Paul Heppenstall, Marc Allard, Pierre Morier, Marc D'Eschambault, Marcel Druwé and Jacques Dorge. But there are nine members according to their album produced in collaboration with Les Productions Jolly Ltée (aka Jolly), which was recorded in November of 1976 and released probably in the same year. The picture above is the second edition released in the late 70s or early 80s (the sticker uses Letraset Pump).

The cover of this album, printed in brown and scarlet red spot colors, uses Gill Sans Extrabold for the title in a tightly spaced setting and with an elongated letter l, with Univers 75 as well for the tracklisting. The Festival du Voyageur logo is in a predigital version of Bulletin Script Two with added distortion.

The body copy on the back and the identifiers appear to be in Theme, a typeface created for the IBM Selectric typewriters between 1968 and 1972.
