On obtient la partie imaginaire en tournant le modèle d’un quart de tour is a research-based, transdisciplinary fiction developed by designer and professor Camille Chatelaine during a residency conducted in dialogue with the Laboratoire de Mathématiques de Besançon (LmB). The project explores parallels between artistic practice and mathematical thinking, approaching mathematics as a narrative and speculative tool rather than solely a system of calculation.

The research is materialized as a journal of residency, conceived as both a mediation object and a call for participation addressed to the LmB research community. The publication makes expressive use of Ready and Petit Frère, both distributed by Plain Form, to support the project’s fictional and conceptual framework. Ready is used on its own (tracked and not), as initials, and occasionally for its emoji.

The project is led by the École supérieure d’art de Franche-Comté (ISBA–SSAC) and supported by the DRAC Bourgogne–Franche-Comté.

The “Instants Gourmands” is an event organised by the city of Besançon, France. The festival took place from 24 to 27 August 2023. Set up under the large trees of Besançon’s Promenade Granvelle, dozens of exhibitors will be showcasing short circuits, local and international flavours, as well as gourmet products to eat in or take away.

Supported by the Office du Commerce et de l’Artisanat, the event is continuing to make progress on the eco-responsibility front and invites you to bring your own cups, cutlery and plates. A food truck will be on hand to showcase Besançon’s chefs, with a tasting session to tantalise the senses, while the Place Granvelle will be alive with music at lunchtime and in the evening.

This year, the visual identity was designed by Baptiste Plantin, using BVH Eddi only.

For the 11th edition of Bien Urbain in Besançon, France, the association Juste ici called on us to carry out the communication of the festival. We have produced a series of posters and media that question public displays and their place in the urban landscape. These invitations to appropriate the public space multiplied in the city during the festival. We have also designed a program plan that allows you to see the past and ongoing works present in the city. But also to learn more about the artists and see the many events.

In 2007, an exhibition in three parts was organized around the work of André Baldinger and Philippe Millot. The exhibition, named Ping-Pong, Échange visuel presented a selection of their work from the last ten years. From type design to signage, through visual identity or the design of books and posters or scenography, their work covers a wide spectrum of visual expression and is regularly the subject of publications, awards and distinctions.

The exhibition was shown at Ecole régionale des beaux-arts de Besançon (ERBA; now known as L’Institut supérieur des beaux-arts de Besançon), ESAD d’Amiens, and Bibliothèque universitaire du Havre.

They used BVH BDot as the main typeface, to evoke ping pong balls, accompanied from time to time by BVH Eiffel Level.

Musiques de rues is a festival that brings together original musical forms (wanderings, sound installations, bricophonie, world music) in the streets of Besançon.

After having developed the graphic charter for the 2006 edition, Thomas Huot-Marchand has been in charge since 2007 of all graphic communication. The identity is based on the diversion of graphic elements from urban signage (zebras), a very bright color code (using a mixture of two fluorescent tones plus two process tones), and the use of his typeface Garaje (also urban inspiration).

At the School of Fine Arts in Besançon [now known as Institut supérieur des beaux-arts de Besançon], with my colleague Rainer Oldendorf, we convened a group of first year students for the creation of a display wall. We used Garaje 0503 Monospace, designed for the school’s visual identity. Each glyph was photocopied in two sizes, A4 and A6. A grid of 750 A6 boxes was drawn on the wall, which Rainer with Gilles Picouet engraved. This physical grid allowed, throughout the year, the weekly collage of all the school’s news messages.

Garaje 0503 Monospace is a fixed-pitch version of Garaje 53 Unicase Black. It’s actually a fake monospace, because the M and W are wider. On the other hand, there is only one line thickness in the entire font, a value that is also found between the letters, and between the lines, and in the counterforms.

The communication documents of the first season were printed with two spot colors, blue and red, visible with 3D glasses (anaglyphs): one could see with one eye what was happening in one place, and what was going on in the second was captured by the other eye; the same treatment was applied to the systematically superimposed images.

Christophe Gaudard is a French graphic designer and a former student of Thierry Sarfis. His posters have been selected, awarded and exhibited in severals international poster and graphic design biennials and triennials. Since 2009 he teaches graphic design at the art school of Besançon.

On this flyer for Citadelle Électronique, a music festival that took place in Besançon in 2007, Gaudard combines various styles of Emigre’s Lo-Res series of bitmap fonts with Courier New. The front side is reminiscient of embroidery samplers. It shows a number of additional monolinear pixel fonts with bifurcated serifs. These are unidentified and might be custom [see comment below].
