All-caps Friz Quadrata Bold for Heartwork, the fourth studio album by English extreme metal band Carcass. The sculpture depicted in the cover art, Life Support 1993, was designed by H.R. Giger, and is an update of a sculpture he created in the late 1960s.

Splendour Festival is Nottinghamshire’s biggest festival. Set in Wollaton Hall & Deer Park, there are five stages of music that spans all genres; from fast-rising stars to world-class performers, and musical icons.

Newly for 2025, Alias Elephant is used for logotype and headline text. It’s supported by Brandon Grotesque.

My first project of Year 3 at Nottingham Trent University explores perceptions of the Union Jack and St George’s Cross, a polarising topic in recent discourse. The statements were collected and curated by myself from an online survey and do not reflect my personal beliefs. The photos were taken in various towns across the Midlands. I really enjoyed working on an editorial project.

The House of Fame is an exhibition conceived by British artist and musician Linder, shown at Nottingham Contemporary. At the heart of the show is a retrospective of Linder’s work –

spanning more than 40 years of photomontage, graphics, costume and performance. Emerging from the Manchester punk and post-punk scenes in the 1970s, Linder focuses on questions of gender, commodity and display. This diverse practice is presented alongside almost 200 works by some 30 artists selected by Linder.

Stretching from the 1600s to today – and gathering together the worlds of art and architecture, fashion and theatre, music and design – the exhibition includes works by Inigo Jones, Mike Kelley, Alison and Peter Smithson, Moki Cherry, Ithell Colquhoun and Heidi Bucher, among many others. The House of Fame draws upon Linder’s many sources of influence and wide-ranging collaborations.

Linder has spent the time leading up to this exhibition as the first artist-in-residence in Chatsworth House’s 500-year history.

The exhibition identity including the window display, a catalog booklet, and an oversized newsprint publication was conceived by Kajsa Ståhl, who’s a founding member of London-based design collective Åbäke and publishing hut Dent De Leone. For the title of the show, she used InProgress by Production Type. The logo-like lockup features capital ligatures, interlocking glyphs, and smaller underlined caps, all of which are part of the font conceived by Lyon-based studio Superscript².

For Linder’s name and accompanying text, Ståhl selected Bitstream’s digitization of Franklin Gothic. The museum’s logo is set in ST Elegant Contemporary, a custom revival of Elegant-Grotesk, commissioned by Sara De Bondt and drawn by Jo De Baerdemaeker in 2009.

Rescue Rooms was born in 2003, with a mission to create a relaxed and welcoming bar & patio for socialising, and an incredible, intimate live music venue space to accomodate upcoming live acts.

In our short but illustrious history, we have been lucky enough to host some amazing artists, including Jungle, The Killers, Dave, Everything Everything, Calvin Harris, The Amazons, Wild Beasts, Four Tet, Jake Bugg, Chase & Status, Bloc Party, Charli XCX, Animal Collective, Loyle Carner, The Libertines, Disclosure, Stormzy, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, London Grammar, Young Fathers, Wolf Alice, Sleaford Mods, and… er… Toploader, amongst many, many others.

Alias Elephant is used for the logotype and headline text, with Futura used for secondary text.

A fine and simple press advert for Boots, the chemists/pharmacy chain, issued in 1937. The design is by Fitton (James Fitton possibly) and produced by the London based agency C Vernon & Sons Ltd. It is interesting that in amongst the modernity of the layout and typeface the old style Boots logo block rather does stick out like a sore thumb! Boots have hung on the their original 1883 identity, albeit with minor stylistic changes, to this day.

Copy is set in Kabel leicht (1927), with loose wordspacing and even more ample linespacing. “First for first aid” uses Prisma (1930), the multiline display companion to Rudolf Koch’s geometric sans.

Alias Harbour has been used for various independent, arts-related projects in Nottingham. These include the identity for the Castle Ruins art exhibition, and artworks by Nottingham-based artist Martin Rayment.

Harbour was also used for the Notts Zine Library exhibition, 2018, which included N to M zine, by Nottingham-based studio Waste. In the booklet, Harbour is paired with other typefaces including Gza and LL Circular [see comments].

Artist Martin Rayment used a distorted and stretched Alias Harbour for a series of text-based speech-bubble artworks. The letters are stencil-cut out of board, so slightly three dimensional. They are attached to the base-board and wall mounted.

Castle Ruins III zine

Castle Ruins is an annual exhibition at the King Billy Pub, Nottingham. It is a showcase of thirteen Nottingham artists who have been randomly selected.

Alias Harbour is used for logo and graphics for posters, riso-printed zines, banners, as well as occasional graphics throughout the exhibition.
