“26 Meter Zug statt 260 Meter Stau. Wo kämen wir hin ohne die Bahn.” (26 meters of train instead of 260 meters of traffic jam. Where would we be without the Bahn?”) Ad in Der Spiegel, June 24th, 1974.

In 1974 and 1975, Deutsche Bundesbahn used Wordsworth as the display type in their ads. Made by Phil Martin for his Alphabet Innovations in 1973, this face appears to be based directly on Les Usherwood’s Graphis (Typsettra, 1971). Usherwood later expanded his Graphis to a four-style family named Barnard & Barnyard, which was digitized by Red Rooster/ITF as Beckenham. Wordsworth was digitized by URW.

Wordsworth (URW’s digitization, top) compared to Beckenham RR ExtraBold (Red Rooster, bottom). The latter is equivalent to Barnyard Extra Bold, formerly known as Graphis. The spacing isn’t great in either of the digital versions.

The comparison above shows how Wordsworth is a tad smoother and less explicitly calligraphic than Graphis/Barnyard/Beckenham. This quality is most notable in the round dots, but also in e or g. In a comment to Phil Martin’s obituary on Typographica, Mark Simonson – who had conducted an interview with Martin in 2004 – comments on the lack of originality in some his work:

Things were different back then. A lot of the stuff he did was perfectly acceptable at the time, but you would never get away with it nowadays if you want to be respected as a type designer. Phil was not a great type designer, but he was a great remixer.

The ad copy seems to be set in a tightly spaced phototype version of Century Expanded.

Website for Daniel Heilig, a young Hungarian-German designer, charismatic artist and creative cosmopolitan, designed by Holographik.

The headers are set in Iskry, with Union used for body text.

The signage of the new Academy of Theatre, Radio, Film and Television, part of the University of Ljubljana, uses Univerza Sans. Expended set with custom icons was added to fit the new signage system of Academy.

The wayfinding was designed by Jernej Kejžar.

The typeface was developed by Alja Herlah to mark the hundredth anniversery of University of Ljubljana, and is available from Type Salon.

Letterhead for Svenja Blobel, a photographer from Hamburg. Svenja's personal focus is in the field of fashion and portrait photography. Setting all text in Sometimes Times, we created a visual balance between the first and last name. It also allowed us to seperate the personal and formal details. In addition to that, the font reflects the photographer’s work with people and fashion.

Brand and packaging design by Studio Gangplank for Bee One Third, an Australian beekeeping initiative founded on the premise that one third of our global food supply depends on bee pollination.

Studio Gangplank produced a packaging system that not only expresses Bee One Third's values, but also solved their growth challenges. Inspired by winemaking’s appreciation of terroir and climate, each hive and harvest features a unique range of artwork to be released in sync with the Australian beekeeping seasons.

The honey company’s logo, in full and compact version, is set in Tilda by Jessica Hische. All copy is set with Aperçu by The Entente.

The pen script is Caprice, designed by Martin Wilke and first issued by Berthold in 1938. Pension Müllauer is still around.

Identity for Les Nuits de Saint-Sauveur, a small French music festival for family and music lovers. I developed an identity which is understandable for a large public, that evokes the feeling of a sunny countryside landscape. The poster is inspired by a monument of the city, an old tower called ‘La Tour Sarrasine’. I made a symbol of it to settle the festival in the local culture.

I picked Belgika 8th to fit the illustration style, assisted by Aperçu for body copy.
