A little lockdown project, attempting to learn about some of the most iconic jazz musicians whilst also doodling. For the type I settled on a combination of Parabole Display and Atlas Grotesk [not Atlas Grotesk, see comments], adding Lyon.

A rare sighting of Tangui, on the book jacket for the hardback edition of The Game-Players of Titan by White Lion Publishers, Ltd., 1974. It’s contrasted with the weighty Gill Kayo.

Conceived by Colombian designer Gustavo Pardo Sarmiento, Tangui was selected as a winner in Letraset’s International Typeface Competition 1973. It added to the wave of wire-like faces that mix single and double monolinear strokes, see also Monika (1970), Eggomania (1971), Neo Script and Branding (1972), Duo (1973), Burgondy Right (1974), or Hairpin (1975). Tangui was digitized by Jonathan Hill as TenGu (The Northern Block, 2009).

Rudolf Maeglin. Maler / Painter is a bilingual monograph published on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the artist’s death on 2 April 2021. It coincides with a large exhibition at the Basel galleries Knoell, Nicolas Krupp und Mueller from 20 March to 12 June 2021.

The Basler artist Rudolf Maeglin (1892–1971) opted to be a painter, thus acting against the upper middle class tradition of his family. In 1933 he was one of the founder-members of the antifascist Gruppe 33. He has lived in the workers’ quarter of Basel, Klybeck, since 1947, has worked in factories and on building sites, painting what he experienced during the day at night. Through his paintings of building sites he advanced to become a documentarist of the rapid changes in his hometown. The oeuvre he produced between 1930 and 1970 is distinctive and multifaceted, but has so far only rarely been widely accessible

This bi-lingual monograph, with numerous reproductions of works from all stages in his career as well as art historical and literary texts, presents Maeglin’s oeuvre to a wide international audience for the first time, and forms the prelude to further engagement with it.

Лабораторная работа (“Laboratory work”) is the name of the joint improv concert of СОЮЗ & Интурист that will take place in Studio 42 in Minsk, Belarus. The name comes from the idea of making a live event in the form of a musical laboratory (e.g. BBC Radiophonic Workshop) focused more on creating sounds and textures.

The titles are set up in the original Gemini and Yagi Link Double typefaces with some self-made Cyrillic glyphs with the accompanying Univers text. There are two variations of the crop-and-repeat technique utilized on the poster. The digital version was printed and scanned in order to get the right texture.
