Description of the project by the designers of Studio Silex:

Poster/invitation imagined for Jean-Yves Barrier exhibition “En quête de la géométrie des rêves”, at Saint-Pierre-des-Corps public library. The architect said “I constructed the Saint-Pierre-des-Corps library lighter and lighter from the ground to the sky, as metaphor of reading experience. The transition between substancial bricks and the large atrium opening on to the sky is like the switchover between the earthly and the spiritual world.

To design the identity of this exhibition, Studio Silex used the typeface Immortel Infra designed by Clément Le Tulle-Neyret and distributed by 205TF.

Bringing together an East Asian drink with Western European Renaissance writing might appear audacious. But in fact it turns out to be an intercultural love match where “craftsmanship” is the core value.

Breathing Tea is a small business based in Hong Kong that fully focusses on producing all sorts of Kombucha tea. As of fall 2024 the firm is represented in six places across Hong Kong and offers an online shop. Name and website of the brand make it clear that the purpose of the enterprise is to offer mindfully handcrafted brews, following the centuries-old tradition.

And it is here where you can see how well the chosen typeface fits in: Francesco was designed by Franck Jalleau on the basis of early Italian Renaissance printing, especially from the presses of Aldus Manutius. The typeface’s name pays tribute to Francesco Griffo who was the punchcutter of Manutius and is seen as one of the central figures in transforming Humanist calligraphy into typography.

Instead of copy-pasting recurring elements of type design, like for instance the serifs, Franck Jalleau strived to emulate the spirit of early punchcutting craftsmanship and to individually balance each letter in its own right, leading to more variation in those details.

Yet Francesco is not a mere revival, but a contemporary take on the Renaissance topic. Most noticeable are certainly the filled black counters of a and e, a characteristic that makes the typeface recognizable and therefore suitable for identity projects. Francesco comes with a variety of stylistic alternates and also provides full Greek and Cyrillic character sets. It was published by Production Type in 2017.

That same year appeared the geometric Halcyon by Jonathan Gibson, the complementary face used on the website of Breathing Tea.

Francesco is used with ample letterspacing. In the logotype, the letter i is represented by the dot only. The compact logo version combines a single letter B (modified to have one open counter) with that floating dot.

Social media typography doesn’t have to be loud or sloppy: a customer testimonial is carefully set using Francesco in roman, italic and small caps, with a discretionary st ligature and hanging punctuation

Kombucha in the making

CellarSpace is an Australian wine-selling website launched in 2022. As of June 2024, the website at cellarspace.com appears to be no longer online. To quote from Swear Words, the agency responsible for the branding:

Inspired by the darkly magical mysteries of aged wine, the dusty vernacular of cellars and 19th Century European wine label typography, the brand identity balances gothic sophistication with lived-in warmth and familiarity.

Swear Words used NaN Tragedy and LL Bradford Mono for the whole identity. Tragedy definitely brings this “gothic sophistication” the design agency refers to, with its oblique contrast in key glyphs (mostly round letters) and its pointy details; while also not being a gothic typeface and keeping the legibility and gentleness of a Roman construction. LL Bradford Mono, in a lighter weight, brings a kind of quieter voice and rhythm to the identity, principally because of its vertical stress. Using a mono also takes the dust out of this project, anchoring it in a more contemporary and more technical aesthetics, seconded by the wide use of borders and rules across the identity.

The combined use of Tragedy in its proportional flavor and Bradford in its monospace one can only make one wonder about CellarSpace's identity if Swear Words had the chance to use the monospace version of the Tragedy family, released by NaN seven months after the launch of the project.

Exclusive to parent brand Ecodure, Duracore is a high-performance rigid-hybrid flooring product. South's identity for Duracore aims to tell the story of its technology and process, supported by supplementary video and art-directed imagery that documents its method of installation and fit for purpose across a range of homes and commercial spaces.

While considered as part of the Ecodure brand system, we wanted to ensure that it maintained its own tone of voice—with a bespoke graphic language required to convey Duracore's unique performance. We took inspiration from the interlocking bevels of the Duracore floorboard system and translated this into a modern, yet storytelling graphic language.

It’s not everyday you get to work with a client as exciting and energetic as this, so when Monkey Baa Theatre Co. approached Universal Favourite for a rebrand, we knew we were in for something fun. In need of a visual and verbal identity that could live up to the invigorating and imaginative nature of their offering, Universal Favourite worked with the team to create a brand that’s as rich in emotion and character as their performances and resonates with audiences both young and old alike.

The logo heroes Sebenta – a contemporary slab-serif in a style often seen in children’s books – and the lockups are playfully put together, creating a mark that’s grounded yet lively, like an excited child trying to stay put in a theatre seat. The simplicity of the wordmark not only celebrates the heritage of the company but acts as a confident, professional anchor for an otherwise energetic brand. It’s paired with Gellix for headlines and body copy – a modern, bold, geometric sans serif that’s easy to read but still holds character and quirk.

At OHMY this last year, it’s been about more than just the output. We’ve doubled our team, matured our offering and welcomed clients from different parts of the world.

We felt our previous identity no longer reflected the studio we’ve become, so we overhauled our brand to bring it in line with who we are and where we’re going.

About the exhibition:

The exhibition Things, authored by Laurence Bertrand Dorléac, proposes a new take on what was long seen as a minor genre, whose name – still life – is intriguing in itself.

Depictions of things, which date back to prehistoric times, are a wonderful window into history. Artists were the first to take things seriously by recognising their presence, imbuing them with life, glorifying their forms and meanings, their power and charm. They captured the ability of objects to fire our imagination – to make us believe, doubt, dream or act.

The exhibition revisits the still-life genre from the perspective of the ongoing dialogue between past and present artists. It sheds new light on our attachment to material things, while covering the history of art from prehistoric axes to Picasso, Chardin, Manet and the readymades of Marcel Duchamp.

The catalog was edited by Laurence Bertrand Dorléac and co-published by Lienart Éditions and Louvre éditions. It has 448 pages with 240 illustrations and measures 25.3×28.8×3.7 cm.

Holise in use for the branding identity of the new Ikigai restaurant based in Madrid, Spain.

Ikigai Velázquez is the new project of chef Yong Wu Nagahira. A second address in the capital with the same name as its first restaurant, but with great innovations in its cuisine and a space destined to become one of the city's landmarks.

In the Barrio de Salamanca, and in a place that has been a benchmark in Madrid, the young chef manages to extol his cuisine and bring his most complete and ambitious Japanese proposal to the capital's public with his personal stamp.

A place where the most hedonistic diners can find many of the successes of their first place, but also the secrets of one of the most original classic Japanese recipes in Madrid with the personal touch of Yong Wu Nagahira.

La Rústica is a pizza restaurant in Nayarit, Mexico, with locations in Punta Mita and Sayulita. Its fun, beachy identity was designed by Futura, featuring a typographic palette that is a blend of soft and pointy. Tropiline is used for the wordmark and the weathered logomark, while Roslindale Display Condensed is the primary font for headlines. The small sans serif used in all caps on the menu appears to be Atlas Grotesk.

The graphic proposal was inspired by old travel postcards with a tropical, beachy feel. A serif typeface inspired by 18th century stylistic trends was used for the logo, and although each branch is designed with slight variations in typography, they maintain the same stylistic values. The icon, featuring an "R", simulates the aesthetic treatment of prints and engravings, with the intention of giving a handmade and handcrafted property. As well as a series of food illustrations that function as visual aids within the brand. The colour palette is inspired by the colours of an idyllic seascape, from morning to sunset.

Pablo Farias is a luthier specialized in the handcrafted creation of violins, violas, and cellos.

For him we developed a website that could show both his creations and his working method thanks to a minimalist design. Through an alternation of black and white with colors, we were able to highlight the heart of his work.


The fonts used represent the transformation that takes place from the raw material to the finished instrument – elegant and exciting.

We used Ayer by Miguel Reyes and Acid Grotesk by Folch.

Art direction for Placement Perfumes, an independent perfume studio from Singapore. Creation of the logo and global identity, brand photography and web design.

Placement Perfumes creates immersive fine fragrances that will traverse through space and time with you. Over seven years of autodidactic fragrance design experience infuses their work with a distinctive voice that simultaneously reveres and obverts established perfume wisdom.

The name Placement was chosen to underscore the reality of each perfume as not just an experiential vapour but a tangible, purposeful object – of art, design, and beauty, contained within its own set of coordinates. A favorite perfume has a place in your heart, in your regimen, and deeper in your subconscious than you might imagine.

For the logo, I used the font Sometimes Times by Boulevard LAB. It is a timeless serif integrating contemporary aesthetics to classic form. Inspired by individualistic old-style serifs and mid ’90s culture. Sometimes Times works perfectly in big and medium sizes while still holding legibility in smaller sizes. The use of both regular and italic fonts emphasizes the aspect of freshness.

For the perfume scents title, I used Byrd by Good Type Foundry. It is chunky, happy and a bit retro, rounded sans serif typeface. I paired it with Simula Book by Sharp Type, a very simple and legible typeface for smaller texts.

Meiwen See is a multidisciplinary brand designer and photographer currently living in CA.
The typography on her portfolio website uses IvyPresto for headlines, quotes, and the menu, paired with Neue Haas Grotesk Text for text. The Journal section additionally has titles in all-caps Mencken Head Narrow. The designer’s name is rendered in tracked out caps from Gopher.

The music video for Dua Lipa’s “Love Again” features Queens by Kilotype. The title as well as the credits are set in the Condensed Bold Italic style and make good use of Queens’ swash alternates. Aided by a dashing drop shadow, the typography is a strong supporting artist to the striking, equine themed visuals. According to Wikipedia the video was

[...] filmed at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London. The visual sees Lipa and her rodeo clown-styled dancers in the hotel's ballroom line dancing, riding mechanical bulls that sometimes disappear and painting eggs. A horse appears and the rodeo clowns attempt to capture a giant egg. Several critics commended the video's message of it being silly to fall in love so soon, as well as its Western style and surrealism.

C O P Y C A T S is a collection of DIY crochet patterns by Los Angeles based designer Erika Maish. Maish’s first book serves as a response to seeing her work being copied online and the prevalent culture of online ‘copycat’ callouts. What if instead of constantly fighting your copycats you worked with them? Historically, luxury fashion brands would sell their patterns for the home crafter to recreate. This practice provides an ethical method of affordable mass production for handcrafted items.

Yamabuki, the latest movie by Juichiro Yamasaki, is “a story of finding a place to root yourself when life’s obstacles have dispirited you”. The movie poster by Aurélia Monnier is issued in two variants which both pair a photograph by Yoshiyuki Uchibori with a movie logo using Arsenica; the small type is set in Frutiger.

You Belong There is the first full-length solo album from singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Daniel Rossen (of Grizzly Bear and Department of Eagles), released on Warp Records.

The album was designed by Justin Sloane, with photography by Amelia Bauer. The back and single covers feature a custom design dubbed You Belong There, drawn by Sloane as an amalgamation of forms found in the lettering of Louis Jou. Captions were typeset in Greenstone, designed by Connor Davenport and available from Sharp Type. The type used for the text set on a spiral and on the record labels is Notre Ami, another unreleased design by Sloane. This ongoing exploration is inspired by the cover lettering of the book Notre ami Louis Jou (1929).
