The concept for the brand emerges from the incredibly high suicide rate among men in the UK: in order to raise awareness about mental health issues, Hall played on the usual sentences that can be heard in pubs, where people can relax and often find a sense of relief after a hard day. Even though alcohol regarding mental health issues is not to be considered a solution because of the risks of alcoholism, the young designer thought of it as a way to normalize opening up about one's own struggling. In a society where gender roles are still strong and the ideal of masculinity represses any demonstration of weakness, the way to free speech about depression is still long.

The identity created for the brewery combines three fonts. Signal Compressed from Production Type is used to set the logotype and some of the typical phrases you can hear at the bar, along with Tobias from Displaay Type Foundry. The technical info is set in Object Sans from Pangram Pangram. This trio ends up in a playful identity where types can switch and appear in speech bubbles, bringing the pun even closer to the reader and reinforcing the effect of phrases picked up from around the table.

Source: insidefred.com Freddie Hall. License: All Rights Reserved.

Source: insidefred.com Freddie Hall. License: All Rights Reserved.

Source: insidefred.com Freddie Hall. License: All Rights Reserved.

Source: insidefred.com Freddie Hall. License: All Rights Reserved.

Source: insidefred.com Freddie Hall. License: All Rights Reserved.

This post was originally published at Fonts In Use

In the 2020, following the health emergency, the project turned into a proper opportunity to investigate the crisis situation of cultural venues, aggravated by the forced closure of all, apparently, non-essential activities. What is the role of culture in this context? How to determine what is a primary good? Is technology truly capable of filling the gaps created by social distancing? After this period, what will happen to the laboratory like activities? These and many other questions were addressed to Italian educators, curators, museologists, philosophers, art historians, architects and designers willing to reflect on the past, present and future of this discipline and to portray the several shapes of museum didactics in this specific time.

The book consists of three parts: the historical texts that led the research, a second part with specific questions on the different professions debating on education, museums and culture. Lastly, a chapter that collects and compares the experiences of designers focusing on workshop activities. This edition collects, in total, fifteen unpublished conversations conducted between December 2020 and February 2021. Sixteen illustrations support the essays.

The title, Domande a distanza 1971—2021 (“Remote questions 1971—2021”) summarizes the different aspects that characterized this project: the concept of museum as a interrogative space, the interviews (how the fifteen essays were collected), the physical distance that identifies this period of time and the distance in time between the historical texts and the release date.

The aim is to continue fueling the debate concerning these issues, whose strength and value seems to have been underestimated, especially during these distinctive times.
