A series of posters and flyers for Architectures Utopiques, a collective art exhibition at gallery La Grenette in Sion, Switzerland. To Temper is used for all typography.

Лабораторная работа (“Laboratory work”) is the name of the joint improv concert of СОЮЗ & Интурист that will take place in Studio 42 in Minsk, Belarus. The name comes from the idea of making a live event in the form of a musical laboratory (e.g. BBC Radiophonic Workshop) focused more on creating sounds and textures.

The titles are set up in the original Gemini and Yagi Link Double typefaces with some self-made Cyrillic glyphs with the accompanying Univers text. There are two variations of the crop-and-repeat technique utilized on the poster. The digital version was printed and scanned in order to get the right texture.

Svalbard Bryggeri, the world’s northern­most craft brewery from Spitsbergen, uses Secca Stencil for their 2020 rebranding, paired with GT Pressura Mono. The small print on the brim of the can seems to use Tungsten.

When we think of masks, we think of carnival, African tribal rites or death masks, theatre and fashion, but also role-playing, wrapping and protection. Masks are among the oldest and most controversial objects in human cultural history. Contemporary artists are not only interested in the mask as an object, but also in its social, cultural and political significance and this book traces the mask in contemporary art.

Atelier Pol designed the exhibition catalogue in close collaboration with the Aargauer Kunsthaus. With rich visual material and short texts on the exhibited works, the volume shows the artists' respective approaches to the broad thematic field of the mask. Two introductory essays additionally shed light on the topicality of the mask and its prehistory in art.

Headlines use Founders Grotesk, all other text is set in Inter and Messina Serif.

Visione Oggettiva. L'oggetto della raffigurazione tra la Neue Sachlichkeit e la Scuola di Düsseldorf traces the visual research of the Neue Sachlichkeit in Germany in the 1920s. It then examines the influence that the artistic movement had on photographers Bernd and Hilla Becher. The photographer couple took research of objectivity to an other level. This was done first through their works, and then through the Düsseldorf School.

This book was developed at ISIA Urbino for the History of Photography and History of Illustration courses, with the supervision of Lucia Miodini and Silvana Sola. LL Unica77 is used throughout.

Brasilia is a monothematic magazine published by students from the Design and Media department of the Hochschule Hannover. It tells “stories by designers for designers, and for everyone who feels at home in this field”.

When do we no longer need something, and how do we make that decision? For its fifth edition, Brasilia set out on a quest to define what is superfluous; to explore how much is too much. Over the course of 150 pages, Brasilia’s interviews, comics and photographic works attempt to cover as many aspects of the wide-ranging topic of waste as possible, with each article also having its own individual look, tailored to support the message of its written narrative. — Stack

Brasilia No. 5 presents an early use of Trash by Bruta Types. The secondary typefaces include Monotype Grotesque and Times New Roman. This issue was awarded Student Magazine of the Year at the 2018 Stack Awards. 220×285 mm, 152 pages, bilingual (German and English).

Mathieu Asselin’s meticulous investigation into the long history of the global biotechnology corporation Monsanto brings together hundreds of documents and photographs depicting the devastating human, ecological and economical impact of the company’s long and reckless story of growth, and their cynical efforts to change their negative public image.
Over five years Asselin conducted extensive research and travelled through Vietnam and the United States of America to find the people and places dramatically affected by Monsanto's past and current practices. His determined approach resulted in an overwhelming depiction that also aims to portray what Monanto's near future might look like. — Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation

Ricardo Báez presents Asselin's research – spanning from text and photographs to a collection of Monsanto advertisements – in a book that counts 156 pages, measures 27×30×2 cm and weighs 1.2 kilograms. Published by Verlag Kettler (English) and Actes Sud (French). This publication won the first prize at the Dummy Award Kassel 2016 and a Honorary Appreciation at Best Book Design from all over the World 2018, and was followed up by an (updated) newsprint edition in 2018.

Just recently well known Suhrkamp Verlag published Judith Schalansky’s book Verzeichnis einiger Verluste. We are happy to find that Judith, providing the wonderful book design herself, chose our Fabiol Pro typeface for typesetting the main text part. The Fabiol family was designed by Robert Strauch and initially released at Lazydogs Typefoundry in 2005. The new Pro version was added in 2018. Fabiol is paired with Weissenhof Grotesk.

Poster for an upcoming documentary movie about the life of the Brazilian inventor Santos-Dumont.

In order to raise funds from potential investors, a poster/information sheet was designed with two typographic voices, juxtaposing a documental tone (Akzidenz-Grotesk) with a more personal and poetic one (Lacrima Serif). The sheet unfolds to reveal more information about the movie, images and upcoming relevant dates—typographically treated as newspaper headlines.

The folded sheet was distributed inside plastic bags to underline the historical-documental nature of the movie and the poster itself. The back contains a blown-up photograph of moments before Santos-Dumont flew his first invention, the Brasil balloon, dated 1898.

This Museumkaart (Museum Card) from De Nederlandse Museumvereniging (the Dutch Museum Association) gave, if filled in and completed with a valid stamp, free access to approximately 170 museums in the Netherlands during the year 1981.

This was the first year the concept of a Museum Card was developed. Until today it's still in use, covering approximately 400 museums with annual 900,000 Museum Cardholders (2013). (Source: Wikipedia)

We see the use of Univers 55 Regular, Univers 65 Bold, Univers 59 Ultra Condensed and Univers 53 Extended Bold.

Community: Italy is an exhibition about “architecture, city and landscape from the postwar period to 2000”, curated by Alberto Ferlenga and Marco Biraghi. On display at Triennale di Milano from 28 November 2015 to 6 March 2016.

The title and the background pattern is composed from the elements included in Tribasei, a digital version of Fregio Mecano. This set of 20 geometric shapes for building letters and images was made in Italy probably sometime in the mid-1930s and appears in a Nebiolo specimen from c. 1954. The designer is unknown, but the author of Modular Type suggests it could be Giulio da Milano who designed Fregio Razionale, another modular typeface system, and Neon, a conventional typeface with similar letterfroms as Fregio Mecano (both Nebiolo, 1935).

In 2015, Tipoteca Italiana and Lino’s Type collaborated on the “Fregio Mecano (digital) resurrection” project. The original elements were scanned and then modeled into bronze with a special 3D printer.

While Section Bold Condensed (Compugraphic, c. 1980s) is a digital interpretation with ready-made glyphs, Luciano Perondi’s Tribasei (2006) is a truly modular digital version. It is available from Molotro and soon from CAST— Cooperativa Anonima Servizi Tipografici.

The type treatment of the description “Architectura Città Paesaggio 1945–2000” is peculiar, too: This is not Mrs Eaves XL Serif, the 2009 addition with larger x-height, but the original Mrs Eaves, with capitals replaced by small caps.
