Amongst collectors, Determined Productions and their founder, Connie Boucher, are probably best known for their work with Charles Schulz and Peanuts. Connie, a former window-dresser, worked closely with Schulz over many years to produce a barrage of Peanuts merchandise, including Schulz's first book in 1962, the international best seller Happiness is a Warm Puppy.

The spreads here are from a series of international and topical cookbooks written by Connie’s sister (and de facto D.P. editor in chief) June Dutton; the series grew out of June’s love of cooking as well as her many years spent living abroad with her children, and features recipes across a wide range of regions, holidays, and themes.

The design and illustration of the cookbooks are by frequent collaborators John Astrop, Eric Hill, and Ann & Bruce Butte. Their collective work is exemplary of the postmodernist pop aesthetic established by artists like John Alcorn, Milton Glaser, and Peter Max, as well as of the psychedelic undercurrent inculcating San Francisco design at the time.

Photo-Lettering’s Eminence in early use for an ad by Nabisco (formerly known as the National Biscuit Company) for their “5 choco-luscious cookies”: Mallowmars Chocolate Cakes, Chocolate Pinwheels, Chocolate Covered Sugar Wafers, Big Dipper Chocolate Pies, and Ideal Peanut Bars. The contoured typeface apparently was chosen to echo the depicted chocolate coating, complete with some “dripping” swashes.

This magazine ad from 1965 features lettering closely modeled after Corvinus. The letterforms sit somewhere between the fett and the schmalfett of Imre Reiner’s mid-1930s design for the Bauersche Gießerei. The small copy is set in News Gothic.

Frosted Rice Krinkles is a discontinued sweet crisp rice cereal brand by Post Foods. It was originally known as Sugar Krinkles and later as Sugar Rice Krinkles. In the early 1970s, probably coinciding with the rebranding as Frosted Rice Krinkles, the package received a major overhaul. The name now was shown in three stacked lines of fat shaded caps; in blue, yellow ocher, and orange.

“Free inside: One Rip ’n Zip Speed Machine. Just rip … ’n zip! Collect all 3”. The ad for Kids magazine on the side mentions an expiry date of 12/31/72. There was also a version featuring “3 Jackson Five Groovie Buttons”.

The lettering appears to be a redrawn Albert. This film typeface was available from Lettergraphics in 1968, together with an outlined and shaded companion style named Fat Albert. The solid cut is different in some details. Most notably, the counters (in C or O) and apertures (in F) in Albert are bigger. The lettering on the cereal box looks like a protruded version of Albert, with a deeper shadow than Fat Albert has. Some letters were further streamlined: the stem of K got a consistent width and R now is on firmer footing.

I assume that Fat Albert is a copy of OP-Letter. If this is true, then Albert was probably derived from Fat Albert (and not the other way around). And “Frosted Rice Krinkles” then is shaded lettering based on a solid typeface, which in turn is based on a shaded typeface copied from a piece of lettering by Walter Haettenschweiler. Along the way, some of its more whimsical details were eliminated, but OP-Letter’s charm is still visible in the contrasting stem widths of N or the horizontal terminals in C or S. Neither OP-Letter nor Fat Albert are available in digital form. In April 2019, however, Pink Broccoli released Mushmouth PB, a digitization of the solid Albert.

The cereal box with this design is prominently featured in a number of TV commercials. Thanks to Duke University Libraries and the Internet Archive, several of them can be found in AdViews, “a digital archive of thousands of vintage television commercials dating from the 1950s to the 1980s. This 32-page full color recipe booklet was published by the National Kraut Packers Association of St. Charles, Illinois in ca. 1975. The typeface used for the cover and the headings is Mierop Ginger Snap C, designed by Craig Mierop for Photo-Lettering, Inc.

Joray fruit rolls are delicious.

Marlow Candy & Nut Company is a distributor of snack foods in the northeast United States, founded in 1968 and incorporated in 1970. Their logo – presumably dating from around that time — is a modified setting of ITC Garamond Ultra Italic, with swashes added to the M, N, and y. Paired with a bright and simple color palette, the “open shade” effect on the logo lends an iconic (if slightly dated) style to the company’s packaging and branding.

This advertising leaflet for Knorr Soßen-Würfel (sauce cubes) was probably printed some time in the 1950s. Note Futura’s tightly spaced ‘ch’ and ‘ck’ digraphs and the use of letter-spacing for emphasis in “Zutaten” (ingredients). The larger bold weight seems to belong to a different geometric Grotesk.

The script used for the recipe headings is Forelle, designed in 1936 by Erich Mollowitz for C.E. Weber. This typeface was also sold by J.D. Trennert as Rheingold. More info on the typeface page.
