Senzatomica is an Italian campaign against nuclear weapons and in favor of global disarmament. It is also the name of a traveling exhibition aimed at raising awareness for the topic among the general public. Until 2022, it toured eighty cities and counted more than 365,000 spectators. Senzatomica is promoted by the Italian branch of the Buddhist Soka Gakkai organization and cooperates with ICAN, the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons.

The campaign’s visual identity was conceived by Pitis e Associati, a studio that operates from Paris and Milan. Responsible for the development of the website was Ilaria Roglieri, equally from Milan. The logotype is a calligraphic piece by Luca Barcellona who happens to live in Milan as well.

Targeting a predominantly juvenile audience, the design sports two main acts: flashy colors and bold typography. The bold face in the headlines is Media Sans by Jean-Baptiste Levée, available from Production Type. Media Sans was designed with an extremely high x-height which gives it an amazing impact in display uses, even with lowercase typesetting.

It is a joy to see how well the designers play with all the possibilities the typeface offers: mixing different widths and weights within the words, they achieve an activating appeal already in the first block of text. Headlines come in lowercase characters or capitals, and also in all-caps italics. Further down the main page of the website you will find animated type as much as a wheel of fortune.

For reading texts and navigation the designers picked GT Flexa (including its monospaced variant) by Grilli Type and Editorial New by Pangram Pangram.

Conference presentation

Great Minds, a brain cancer foundation, is a group of individuals who share one common goal: no more brain cancer. They have a ten year history of building community through fun events and raising essential funds to support research at The James OSUCC. Great Minds were expanding their events and needed a brand that could grow with them. We created a new name and visual identity that authentically represents who they want to be.

The logo is based on Sharp Grotesk, with customizations.

Arrows is a collaborative onboarding SaaS product designed to reduce back-and-forth with customers while driving more engagement.

Kite is an emerging communications and event management agency from Oslo. Their core philosophy revolves around delivering memorable and meaningful experiences to diverse audiences. Emdash worked with Kite on building its visual identity and online presence.

The flight of the kite symbolizes freedom, creativity, and a sense of common direction. The visual concept builds upon those notions to form a flexible system, thus literally creating space for the agency’s portfolio as its main focus. The simple typographic expression is balanced with an expressive color palette that reflects Kite’s playful and energetic personality as well as the company’s broad expertise.

As it stands, our recycling system is broken. A huge amount of what are meant to be recyclable products continue to end up in landfills. We’re in a waste crisis. Single-use plastics are amongst the most problematic and widespread of materials and in order to move away from them we need two things; behavioural adjustment and healthier, alternative materials.

Enter Phantm, an Australian start-up working to help build a circular economy through the development of novel materials. Through the use of microbial-based biopolymer technology, they have found a groundbreaking way to replace single-use plastics and address some of the challenges presented by food waste, pollution and climate change.

Phantm’s technology converts organic waste into a natural material that is fully recyclable, can be composted in soil and biodegrades in ocean environments. The first enterprise of its kind in Australia, Phantm is merging commercial viability with sustainable vision and needed to back this with a strong, planet-positive brand.

As their brand builders, Smack Bang were tasked to build an identity that embodied their innovative approach and audacious vision. As such, it was imperative for our team to design something powerful and distinct. A modern colour palette of deep greens and salt was chosen to indicate their work with natural materials, whilst prominent accents position them as pioneers of the climate-change revolution.

Bold and iconic, Phantm’s wordmark is a visual interpretation of the circular economy. The mark is representative of a P and recreates the traditional recycling icon with added momentum and contemporary relevance.

Phantm’s finished identity is intelligent and forward-thinking. A reflection of their considered vision, it feels just like the kind of brand we want to see leading the way towards a better, healthier future. The identity is set in GT Flexa, Archivo narrow for the upper case, and Inter for body text.

Project scope: Branding, Brand Strategy, Name Development

Rebranding, website, and communication for Hear Me Out by Benjamin Jackson with messaging and brand strategy by Denisse Ariana Pérez.

Hear Me Out is a culture strategy service for growing teams. We talk to employees confidentially, find the patterns in their feedback, then use the insights we uncover to make work more rewarding for everyone.

The brand needed to appeal equally well to employees, senior executives, and HR leaders, all of whom have very different needs, motivations, and concerns.

The website uses GT Flexa (Grilli Type), both normal and compressed, for headlines, and Nouvelle Grotesk (Nouvelle Noir) for body copy and tabular data.

Hear Me Out is about creating space at work for a range of perspectives. The logo is based on the Necker cube, a classic optical illusion that tricks the eye into seeing it from two angles at once, and was inspired by the logo of Fidelity Union Bank by Bill Cannan, Kurt Heinz, Linda Kondo, Bruce Barrett & Lisa Weiner (1983).

The typeface combination signals the seriousness and professionalism of the service while retaining a touch of creativity and imagination.

Altafonte is a music distributor with a large presence in Latin America. I was invited to set up an identity system for the brand's social networks, based on bright colors and a number of widths from the Sharp Grotesk family. The system is used by different channels in various countries and currently is implemented best by Altafonte Brasil’s Instagram.

Judy is an emergency-preparedness startup company that has prepared a collection of “Ready for Anything” kits and resource tools for individuals and families when they need it most. The company launched in 2020 and uses Sharp Grotesk for its logotype and branding.

Judy’s typography emphasizes the all caps, bold, 25 width of Sharp Grotesk. The type paired with a vibrant orange, black, and white color scheme make for a simple, impactful, and straight-to-the-point identity. Each kit includes an assortment of products labeled with Sharp Grotesk across several key categories: first aid, warmth, safety, food, water, and tools. On the website, Sharp Grotesk is combined with LL Akkurat.

The movement to legalize cannabis in the USA has created a wave of business opportunities for budding entrepreneurs. One such startup is Recess, a new, beautifully-designed “sparkling water infused with hemp extract and adaptogens for balance and clarity.” The boutique brand agency Day Job designed the company's brand identity with a dreamy elegance, using Sharp Grotesk throughout the website, and product packaging.

We were called to create and develop a visual identity system for a new company focused on offering personalised car insurance plans through an online platform. They were looking to be seen like a different offer from the already established and old-school companies; they are all about connecting agents with users and coming up with plans full of benefits. We decided to make the whole system based around a character: ‘Gomii’. A warm guy capable of adapting to different situations keeping the brand alive. He is flexible, fast, friendly, playful and always protecting you.

Etnohaus is where art takes place. People meet, make music, exchange opinions.
A creative center for projects and spaces in Rio. They invited us to enter the house, so that we could arrange the things that were going on there.

Our role was convey the whole essence of Etnohaus in design. We made a logo that says a lot about how they see each other: through a circle, in a place with no hierarchy. Where everything and everyone unites through music, respecting the personality of each other. Where everyone is welcome.

From there on, we selected colors that could express these fine personalities, a typographic selection that communicated everything they were talking about, and putting it all together in a system that would be easy to replicate on the communication platforms they use.
