Kraft Market is a new urban terrace in the heart of Bucharest, Romania. With environmental and graphic design by Daniel & Andrew Design Studio, the market makes extensive use of my typeface Megazoid… I couldn’t be happier with how they have put it to use!

Kraft Market combines the experience of an urban garden with the commitment to tell the story of the craftsmanship community. Megazoid typeface perfectly checks all the boxes of this identity and wordmark. It has a beautiful structure made of raw elements, that creates a memorable tension between readability and abstraction. This expresses in a visual manner both the unique profile of the space and what it means to build something handmade.

Kraft Market’s logo and headlines take advantage of Megazoid’s alternate single-story a and rounded e, which softens its appearance slightly. Freight Text serves as a companion face, used for supporting text and some headlines. The type is accompanied by bright colors, bold geometric patterns, and simple but effective illustrations. The environmental graphics include large illuminated signs and neon.

The lovely illustrations were done by Alina Georgescu, and Kaustik served as the production studio on the project.

The market’s visual language has grown to include a Christmas pop-up (Târg de Krafciun), which features some beautiful three-dimensional uses of Megazoid, as well as Forma DJR for informational text.

Enhypen’s new identity for their EP Dark Blood showcases the Romie typeface, reflecting a blend of style and modern typography.

Enhypen, a renowned K-pop group, brings a distinct aesthetic to this release. The fonts used are Romie Regular and Italic, including some customization. Romie is designed by Margot Lévêque and published by Margot Lévêque Studio.

The Japanese clothing brand Edwin opened a new store in Antwerp, Belgium, in December of 2022. For the occasion, they commissioned graphic designer Stephanie Specht to produce communication elements, signage and limited merch. Paired with Sometimes Times by BoulevardLAB, it is the first-ever public use of Plain Form's Ready, then freshly released with the launch of the foundry.

The Hochschule für Gestaltung Offenbach offers students an interdisciplinary, diverse and collaborative environment. During the Rundgang, the university's annual exhibition, students from all disciplines can present their work. Because of this comprehensive diversity, a formal appearance that is as abstract as possible is needed each year for the Rundgang, in order to represent the various disciplines in the same way. For the 24th Rundgang, students themselves had the opportunity to contribute to the visual identity to represent the university in the best possible way.

The advertising materials contained only the information about the tour, which was placed like a frame around a white area in the center. This acted as a kind of “blank canvas”: here, all students were given a space to integrate their own design/art into the appearance. Each of the posters, invitations and billboards thereby became unique, a work of art created by different participants. The students were offered a platform to show their own works away from the actual tour in the public space. In addition, the concept visualized the range of the university’s internal teaching.

A large part of the posters were painted by students before they were hung, while a small part of the posters and the rented large surfaces were only available for display after the posters had been hung. The “blank canvas” was also intended to initiate an active discourse—both within and outside of the university. It offered the opportunity to enter into a shared exchange.

With the help of this democratic design, the values of the university (diversity, interdisciplinarity, and community) were shown in a creative way, and the location of the Rundgang was expanded to include places away from the exhibition venues.

In total 400 posters, 5,000 invitations and seven billboards were painted.

La Bouquet, run by 시요니 siyeon, is a feminine fragrance brand that evokes a certain time in your memory, designed by Gina Shin. The main note consists of various florals as if you are smelling a bouquet. The art direction was shot as if you're watching a still scene of a movie to capture the moment in time.

The elegant full-cap serif typeface, Ninna by Margot Lévêque, evokes the feeling of a quick scribble and poetry capturing the thoughts in the moment. The logotype is designed with the italic style of Henry by Matthieu Cortat.

Grand Slang (Nikolas Type), Archia (Atipo) and the Korean typeface Sandoll 고딕Neo1유니코드 (Sandoll) in use for the Blue-ray box set of Céline Sciamma’s Trilogie. The coming-of-age trilogy by the French director consists of Naissance des pieuvres (Water Lilies, 2007), Tomboy (2011), and Bande de filles (Girlhood, 2014).

Designed by Studio Gomin in Seoul, the trilogy collection comes with a high-quality outer box and digipak case, an 80-pages mini book, as well as beautifully blind embossed postcard sets that remind of Polaroids, displaying six stills per film.

In collaboration with Nikolas Type, Studio Gomin made a transformation of Grand Slang to express the symbol of growth and anxiety, to emotionally match this special collection.

Céline Sciamma coming of age trilogy set in the Korean Design Annual.

Kertész – Lartigue. Un pas de côté is the catalogue for the eponymous exhibition at Espace Richaud, Versailles in 2023. It is published by Bernard Chaveau Édition with the city of Versailles and the Médiathèque du patrimoine et de la photographie.

This book presents a selection of photographs by two pioneers of modern photography. Jacques Henri Lartigue and André Kertész each built their own work, following parallel or divergent paths, but systematically on the fringes of the major trends. Neither journalist, nor documentary filmmaker, nor actor of the event, each gave his photographs a timeless dimension that explains the ever-renewed interest of the spectators (Bernard Chaveau).

Kertész – Lartigue was designed by Clémence Michon and typeset in Persona (Abyme, 2022) and Louize Display (205TF, 2013).

Niki de Saint Phalle. Les années 1980 et 1990. L’art en liberté (“Niki de Saint Phalle. The years 1980 and 1990. Art in freedom”) is an exhibition dedicated to the French-American artist Niki de Saint Phalle. It was held in Les Abattoirs in Toulouse from October 7th, 2022 to March 5th, 2023. In the accompanying catalog, you will find images from her œuvre, various texts (by Annabelle Ténèze, Lucia Pesapane, Julie Crenn, Karine Lacquemant, Thibault Boulvain, Mica Gherghescu, and Ruba Katrib), and a chronology of de Saint Phalle’s work. A substantial book of 224 pages, measuring 22×27 cm and weighing 1.25kg that makes a complete retrospective on the work of Niki.

Titles are set in all-caps ABC Maxi Round, marking a certain modernity in the look of Niki de Saint Phalle’s work. Art direction and graphic design by Agnès Dahan Studio, co-published by Gallimard and Les Abattoirs. The sans serif used for the texts and captions is ABC Marfa. Ayer and TT Hoves are the brand typefaces of Mélange, a exquisite dinnerware brand based in Los Angeles. From the simple to the precious, the serious to the whimsical, Mélange offers a wide range of tableware that is sure to impress the most discerning customers.

We created a new visual identity that reflects the essence of the unique style and approach of Mélange products. The main concept is to convey the quality and craftsmanship that are at the core of Mélange's values. The logo reflects both minimalism and disruptiveness, with a condensed effect on the letters that convey modernity and sophistication.

Hahaha. The humor of Art, a collaboration between KANAL-Centre Pompidou, the Centre Pompidou and ING Belgium, was one of Brussels’ flagship exhibitions in 2021.

Re-opening after 18 months of closure, the ING Art Center presents more than 200 works, selected by Nicolas Liucci-Goutnikov, curator of the Centre Pompidou and Anne Petre, head art curator at ING Belgium. The eclectic and wide-ranging collection – separated into eight themes – reveals the overlooked role of humour in major art movements from the 19th century to the present day.

The accompanying bilingual exhibition catalogue by Huz & Bosshard is typeset in multiple widths and styles of Klub designed by Pierre Pané-Farré.

Klub is used in all its capabilities to its full extent: from straight body copy, visually-loud chapter openers and for typographical hierarchies like footnotes. Throughout the catalogue Klub 04 Medium, Klub 06 Bold, Klub 08 Medium as well as all styles of Klub 11 are paired with ITC Century. The result is powerful and strong design on the basis of a strict book architecture. In addition the catalogue comes with a booklet with English translations in which the typographic motive is repeated.

Eat, drink, love – that’s the motto of Abstinence, a stylish restaurant located on La Motte-Picquet in Paris. Abstinence is the latest addition to the portfolio of Guillaume Benard’s Fitz Group, which already operates the Fitzgerald and the Vesper. According to Elodie Rouge’s review for Do It in Paris, Abstinence is distinguished by “a highly instagrammable decor”:

Here, you can disembark to flirt with your loved one or have fun in a group around a cocktail and plates to share in a glam and sophisticated atmosphere with a socialite clientele at the rendezvous.

Velvet curtains, candles, banquettes and tall seats in olive or tobacco leather, vibrant playlist, impressive Sarrancolin marble bar, extraordinary glass roof that fills the place with incredible light: the tone of this singularly cool address in the 15th district is set!

This mix of cool and chic extends to the typography. While the logotype sports whimsical sans-serif caps with Art Nouveau characteristics, all other text from the menus to the website is rendered in a contemporary serif with sharp details.

Abstinence’s visual identity was conceived by Abmo. The Paris-based studio led by Sonia Cordier and Dezyderiusz Gusta specializes in spectacular identities for the hospitality industry, see for example their work for Frenchie Restaurant and Hotel Sookie.

For the logo, Abmo created a custom typeface: Abstinence is characterized by a high waistline and an idiosyncratic S. The font has wide caps in the uppercase and narrrower alternates in the lowercase, which get mixed via OpenType features. Keussel provided the font production.

The brand typeface is Rector. Drawn by Type & Media graduate Hrvoje Živčić, it was published by Production Type in 2021, just a few months before Abstinence opened its doors. Rector often is used in all caps and big sizes, like for the three-word messages “EAT DRINK LOVE” or “OPEN ALL SUMMER”, flaunting its wedge-shaped bars and knife-like diagonals, which hint at its inspiration in stonecarving and monumental letters. Rector also appears in mixed case on the website and the printed menus, where it makes for a dignified text typeface with an unmistakable voice.

Guests are greeted by the custom logotype on the awning.

A24's recent publication designed by Studio Elana Schlenker and Jordi Ng. A 574-page hyper-local travel guide book to the most far-out state in America. The book features a puffy cover with blocky, eccentric display typography reminiscent of classic Florida postcards (a modified version of WT Zaft² published by WiseType and designed by Jacob Wise and Céline Hurka). The rest of the book features a range of typefaces including Fátima Lázaro’s Cardone (205TF), Swiss 721 (Bitstream), and Hammer (Out of the Dark).

The colour palette revolves around a “Florida Pink” swatch, a shade of pink that was pulled from the wildlife and architecture of the state. Each chapter of the book corresponds to a different geographical part of the state and begins with a fold-out illustrated map of the locations and landmarks in that chapter. Folios on the side of each page provide strong wayfinding and a sense of location throughout the book.

Edited by Gabrielle Calise and illustrated by Gabriel Alcala, with an introduction by Tyler Gillespie.

Abraham Palatnik: Experimentation/Enchantment is the largest monograph ever published on the artist. The publication aims to reaffirm the innovative nature of his practice, broadening and renewing the dialogue about Palatnik’s work, with an ample selection of archival images and works by the artist, as well as historical and unpublished texts written by Pérez-Oramas, curator Abigail Winograd, a specialist in abstract art in South America, art historian Kayra Cabañas and curator Gabriel Pérez-Barreiro. The publication is organized by critic and curator Luiz Camillo Osório.

The kinechromatic apparatus, an important series by the artist, was the starting point of the design by Bloco Gráfico. The transparency of the printed tracing paper was used as a graphic resource analogous to the work’s materiality. This feature is used on the dust jacket and openings of the book and texts, revealing part of the content below. On the cover, the analogy was reinforced by BallPill, rigidly geometric and idiosyncratic, like parts of mobiles, dialoguing with the geometric shadows of Palatnik’s apparatus and other works such as the kinetics objects. The sans used for captions and body copy appears to be Styrene B (see comments).

Delay is a Brazilian jewelry brand that uses Kaftan Serif for the logo. From the designers of their identity, Lasca Studio:

Delay was born from a moment of immersion in self-knowledge that led to the need of sharing this vision that awakens the artistic and beauty. Delay is presence. Intention. Look within. Overflow on the surface. With these concepts, we’ve planned a visual identity system exploring reflection as a central theme. The symbol represents the mirror and its shine, while the selection of textures and materials exhibit transparency and solidity.

Rebrand for men’s hair and wellness studio Shinko (新古; “new and old”) from earlier this year. Unfortunately the studio was forced to close as a result of Melbourne’s lockdown before this brand could hit the ground, but fingers crossed it’s something they can revisit in the future.

Mezzo, naming project, visual identity and developments.

Mezzo was born at a full table, overflowing with flavor, affection and laughter. The traditional Italian panino has a contemporary touch for an explosion of unforgettable flavors.

We thought about all the details with great care and affection, selecting special ingredients for the perfect pairing and a true affective cooking experience.

The main typefaces are Holise and Hartone, with Bogam used for the logo.

The German company Planted is using Brûle for its logotype and communication materials. Brûle was designed by Andrei Robu for Typeverything, and the identity was designed by LIT Create:

Planted actively fights climate change by helping individuals offset their own carbon footprint with a monthly subscription that plants trees and supports compensation projects. We proudly support the team and their mission from the very start of the organization and the planting of the first tree at the beginning of 2021.

Opened in 1910, Nashville’s first “million-dollar” hotel has undergone a brand overhaul with today’s traveler in mind. Its opulent rooms famously hosted campaigners for (and against) women’s right to vote, with the yellow-rose-wearing Suffrage supporters winning by a hair.

In honor of this pivotal event, Mucca's rebrand leans into a bold signature yellow, paired with custom typeface, Suffragette, inspired by the hotel’s Beaux Arts interiors. A contemporary tone of voice redefines this heritage brand for a new era of modern Southern hospitality.

PNEU is an editorial project produced at the École supérieure d’art et design Grenoble-Valence, designed and edited by students of the MA in graphic design. It is a place to form ideas, write and share. Most of the texts and articles are proofs of a work in progress or of an encounter made during a workshop, a lecture, a journey – real or ‘around my room’.

PNEU currently exists as a website, developed by Cédric Rossignol-Brunet, set in Vroum Gti (Lift Type, 2015/2020) and English Egyptian (Abyme, 2017) for the titles and in the OCR-generated Gensco (Fond de riz, 2021) for the text. The first version of the site, launched in 2022, includes conversations with designers Europium and FormaBoom and texts by artists Silvio Lorusso and type designer John Hudson, among others.

A printed version is in preparation.

Kaffein is a coffee brand specialized in small batch roasted coffee beans from Indonesia. Branding and identity by Darling Visual Communications in Singapore.

From their case study:

We felt that the relationship between art and coffee could be built upon as a distinct difference at the heart of the brand. From this notion, we developed the brand idea ‘The Art of Coffee’. To strengthen this positioning we created a visual identity based on a gallery concept. Each Kaffein product features a specially commissioned original artwork, displayed like installations, in a ‘white cube’ setting. Bold display fonts become gallery captions bringing the brand identity to life.

The Kaffein logo is set in Sud, paired with Graphik and an unidentified Japanese font for text [it’s Kozuka Gothic, see comments].
