Description of the project by Agnès Dahan Studio (translated from the French):

As part of the Parade exhibition at the Biennale de Chaumont 2023, we designed a newspaper commenting on 23 full-scale book covers produced by the studio. At Vanina Pinter's request, we tried to describe our creative drivers, our working methods, recount our encounters and the anecdotes that punctuate our projects and make each book a unique experience. We've also specified the techniques and materials we use to best reflect the materiality of each edition.

The newspaper is entirely set in Remix B. It measures 332×475 mm and has 48 pages. The Parade exhibition took place from May 27 to November 21, 2023 at Le Signe in Chaumont.

Alltag – German for the “everyday” – is an ongoing experimental and multidisciplinary research project about nothing special. Literally. Composed of things, processes, matters of fact, people and environments that are being explored and curated in respect of their link to the supposedly normal. Against this backdrop various artists working in various media have been invited to pick up the notion of the everyday, contributing to an eclectic set of perspectives. The collected results have been worked into a contemporary newsprint publication: 32 pages, 285×400 mm.

For Alltag we aimed for a teasingly wide range of layout possibilities, limiting ourselves only to a fixed (yet modular) grid system and manageable set of typographic parameters. Using Enduro and Impressum (in single, regular styles) allows for typographic differentiation and character while, at the same time, due to their similar visual weight, maintaining a sense of consistency – using them interchangeably (even within the same paragraph) comes close to using a Regular and Italic cut of one font. In addition, we feel the fonts’ understated, legibility-oriented designs fit in with the concept of “the everyday” (with the extra perk of the Egyptienne being rooted in classic newsprint). Typographically we wanted the experimental nature of the project to materialise via layout and not have it compete with an already experimental, idiosyncrasy-heavy font.

Венец. Добро пожаловать в Идеальное (“Venets: Welcome to the Ideal”) is an investigative research into the nature of ‘the ideal’ in USSR, based on the story of the Venets high-rise hotel, built in Ulyanovsk in 1970. In 2017, with the support of the VAC Foundation, the book was published in English and sold in a small print run of 500 copies at independent bookstores in Europe. For the past six months, Gluschenkoizdat has been working on the Russian-language version of the book, and now we are finally ready to announce the pre-order of the new edition. Venets is fully done and is now in the second stage of proofreading.

The book was transformed into a large newspaper format (400×578 mm, 36 pages). We’ve been able to preserve most of the photographs, all texts and documents, and even added some more.

For the typography, Steinbeck and Quant Antiqua are used throughout.

Dínamo is a quarterly publication that includes the youth program of the City Council of Murcia along with interviews to the freshest of the city. Each issue revolves around a specific theme, which serves as a backdrop to introduce the programming contents of the city’s youth services. Three youth centres, youth creation support programmes, outdoor activities, languages… and tailor-made content developed for each issue.

The typography pairs various weights of two grotesks: the narrow Akkordeon for headlines and Beatrice for longer texts.

PhotoSaintGermain supports young artists and commissions the creation of the festival’s official image to a new emerging talent each year. In 2018, this was Thomas Boivin.

Roch Deniau was invited for the identity, art direction, and website of the 2018 edition. For the typography, he chose to use Klod.

Suisse Int’l is used in a supporting role, for credits and other small print.

B–SIDES is a collection of photographic moments exploring the visual language of Brighton through the eyes of local graphic designer Ian Caulkett. B–SIDES looks at the space that surrounds his daily life and the elements that inform his work as a designer — the unremarkable detail, the graphic qualities of found typography, shapes, lines, colour and shadows. He is drawn to the detail, the changes in the immediate landscape; whether walking the same route every day, or finding a new area of this beautiful and fascinating city.

Europa Grotesk is used as headline and body copy throughout the publication — an extended em dash adds a consistent and subtle graphic device.
