Wannabe is an independent online store, selling high-end iconic collectibles of action figures and props for lovers and newbies worldwide. The brand identity is constructed upon strong typographical choices – Toy (Out of the Dark) and Apoc (Blaze Type) – reflecting the visual culture of science-fiction movies. Uxum Grotesque (Bureau Nuits) is used for smaller text. The variety of fonts used in the website pages gives a pleasing sensation of movement.

Lewis Carroll’s full text is brought to life with Júlia Sardà’s excellent illustrations. First published in Spain 2015 by Grupo Planeta, this edition is published in the UK 2019 by Two Hoots, with the interior designed by Becky Chilcott. Kingfisher is used at a large size throughout for the main body text. The songs, riddles and poems are highlighted in Kingfisher’s italic style. Filosofia and Gioviale are used for titles and headings. The cover was added by Two Hoots for the UK edition and features lettering.

Faber & Faber’s paperback editions of the novels by the English author Emma Carroll use Sveva for titlings. The all-caps display typeface by astype is paired with Plantin for the author’s name, blurbs, and other text. The first book Frost Hollow Hall was published in 2013, the latest The Somerset Tsunami in 2019.

In spring 2019, the Salzburg Museum presented an exhibition dedicated to the Austrian artist and illustrator Alfred Kubin (1877–1959) who spent much of his childhood and youth in Salzburg.

MOOI designed the exhibition graphics. They decided to contrast the often gloomy, always imaginative works of Kubin with light scenography including bright, vernal colors. For the typography, Mooi opted for a contemporary display sans serif. It is Ermin Međedović’s Fino Sans. This choice was partly inspired by the cover of the first edition of Kubin’s novel Die andere Seite from 1909. The lettering uses capitals of narrow proportions (interspersed with some wider ones), distinguished by a pronounced stroke contrast. Fino Sans shares several of these characteristics without being retro, and can be regarded as a modern, more straightforward equivalent. The pattern of thick and thin strokes also is a good fit for the pen-written and drawn elements in Kubin’s work. The text face that goes with Fino Sans is TheSans, which is the font used in the museum’s identity.

Children are guided through the exhibition by a “Unicorn Lion” which is derived from Kubin’s Chinese Lions. The script typeface used for this aspect of the exhibition is Pastiche Brush.

Monteiro Lobato’s most classic book was just published in a new luxury edition by Companhia das Letrinhas. The book was designed by Juliana Vidigal, with illustrations by Lole. This special edition was initiated and organized by Marisa Lajolo, Brazil’s greatest specialist in Lobato’s work.

The main character is a rag doll. The layers of fabric, stitching, embroidery and patchwork inspired the use of Peter Biľak’s History (Typotheque, 2008) for the titles. History comes in 21 styles, ranging from letter skeletons with high and low contrast to layers of slabs and swashes. The book makes use of a good deal of them, partially reproduced by embroidery. Eduardo Berliner’s Pollen (TypeTogether, 2011) is used for the book text and footnotes. The footnotes explain the Brazilian vocabulary and customs of the 1920s through fun dialogues between characters in a design that simulates chat conversations.

Couple from my collection. Read loads of these as a kid. Beautiful artwork and well written. A perfect way to pick up the basics in half an hour or so. What’s not to like?
