SPQR Now, Imaginarios contemporáneos en torno a la antigua Roma (“SPQR Now, Contemporary Imaginaries of Ancient Rome”) was written by Tono Vizcaíno Estevan and published by Sans Soleil Ediciones, in a design by Carles Rodrigo Monzó.

During his fellowship at the Real Academia de España en Roma (Spanish Academy in Rome), archaeologist Tono Vizcaíno Estevan conducted research on the contemporary reception of the classical past. Its aim is to analyze the new languages generated by the confluence of Archeology and mass culture in the 21st century Rome.

This intersection serves as the foundation of the book’s design concept, blending ancient with contemporary inspired elements to create this contrast that defines its identity.

The 16:9 book format, like the standard mobile proportions, reflects how we perceive the world today; the embossing of a marble jpg, distorted by an internet-sharing error, adds a feeling of pixelated rocky surface; a typeface that merges classical elegance with a contemporary edge evokes a grandiloquent yet unmistakably Roman aesthetic; and the inner page layouts draw inspiration from romantic old-fashioned designs with a brutalist twist.

How do you bring a design perspective to a community most would overlook?

At Panfolk, we’ve explored this question in our first case study, crafting an identity for the birthplace of František Palacký, one of Czech history’s towering figures. The answer? It’s complicated.

For Hodslavice, we wanted to rethink how a village could engage with its own past. Editorial New became a key part of that exploration—not as a flourish, but as a functional way to reflect the community’s character. Supported by Formula Condensed, it feels right at home on the village noticeboard while still connecting back to Palacký’s intellectual legacy.

The visual language needed a voice that didn’t feel out of place—a type that could speak to the everyday, but also carry a bit of weight when it came to local history. The written content throughout the village—whether it’s wayfinding markers, informational panels, or community newsletters—aims to balance the informative with the engaging. It’s about telling stories that are grounded in place, without turning them into a spectacle.

In reimagining Hodslavice’s look, we wanted to blend old and new in a way that felt natural. The stag from the 18th-century seal still features, reinterpreted for today, but it’s the tonality throughout that keeps it feeling coherent. It allows the history to feel like something you encounter as you move through the village, woven seamlessly into the present rather than kept at arm’s length.

First Street [is] an NYC 501(c)(3) tech nonprofit that quantifies and communicates the impacts of climate risks. First Street’s data is used by leading experts across many industries, government agencies and everyday Americans.

The organisation’s 2024 rebrand features a combination of Superior Type’s Restart Hard (headlines and body text) and MD IO from Mass-Driver (supporting text & technical data). Together with some great photography, the result is an identity that feels clean, confident, and high-tech.

Description of the project by The Greenway, a contemporary public park in Boston:

Going to Ground is a site-specific sculpture from artist Larissa Rogers that engages with the life of Zipporah Potter Atkins. In 1670, Potter Atkins became the first-known Black woman to own a home in Boston on land which is now cared for by The Greenway. Her history was brought to light by Dr. Vivian Johnson, Professor Emerita of Boston University, after 6 years of archival research.

Stuff & Nonsense is one of the best known web design studios in the UK. They specialize “in creative visual design for websites and web applications and for eighteen years [they have] worked with clients from all around the world.”

For the typography of their own studio website, Stuff & Nonsense have relied on Jubilat since 2013. Designer Andy Clarke on the “Go, go, go, rillas!” relaunch:

I’d fallen in love with the Jubilat typeface from Darden Studio. It’s incredibly versatile and has its own strong personality. We’ve used Jubilat in four weights, extra light, light, regular and bold, all served through Typekit who have made Jubilat look especially fabulous on screen. We now also use Jubilat for all our other materials too.

With the latest redesign dubbed “It’s the taste”, a second typeface by Darden Studio was added to the mix. Omnes is used in light and medium weights, complementing Jubilat in all sections of the website.

Headlines are rendered in the elegant ExtraLight weight of Jubilat, while body text is set in the more robust Regular. The sans serif Omnes is specified for subheads and complementary information in the sidebar.

Omnes takes the lead in the design section.

The Contact overlay page features Omnes’ appealing numerals — mixed inline with Jubilat.

The Design page demonstrates that Jubilat performs great across a range of sizes.

The header is distinguished by reversed type, in white against shades of red. While the logo features Jubilat Bold (with a custom raised ampersand), the menu is in Omnes Medium.

The studio’s blog “And all that Malarkey” has become a go-to resource for standards conscious web designers and developers from around the world.
