The brand typography is set in Right Slab by Alex Slobzheninov (Pangram Pangram); Saans by Martin Vácha (Displaay Type) and Division by Alff Rosine (Skrr Type).

Cherry Creek Framing is a Denver-based company that was created in 2004. The new owner hired me for a brand refresh. Inspired by the block printing they would sometimes frame, I created an identity that feels classic, with room for experimentation and playfulness. As it is a field that does not evolve significantly over time, I drew inspiration from classic European typography and traditional printing methods.

Issue 20 brings together visionaries across art, fashion, music, and activism. Julio Torres and Ziwe trade notes on creativity and chaos; Ali Sethi explores the spiritual and political dimensions of sound; and Brittany Broski opens up about going from viral fame to pop music. We spotlight a conversation between artists Yvonne Wells, Liam Lee, and Misha Japanwala who are transforming craft into something radically connective. Plus: climate activist Xiuhtezcatl Martinez on the power of Indigenous resistance, and fashion that dares to dream.

CIA GD is the Graphic Design BFA program at Cleveland Institute of Art. Its dedicated website was designed by CIA GD associate professor Adam Swift Lucas. Information about the course is colorfully set over a single page in Charles Mazé’s Axo (Abyme, 2024).

Paradykes Club is a Lausanne-based collective born to celebrate lesbian pride: “The principle is simple: as much dykeness and joy as possible! A program that celebrates lesbian, feminist, and queer cultures from here and abroad.”

Redesigned by Lara Défayes, their rebranding from Vagin Pirate to Paradykes is set in the Black weight of Bastardo Rounded, the latest release from Giulia Boggio, based on Bastardo Grotesk.

Austrian author Jaqueline Scheiber – best known for her essay collections and cultural commentary – launched her fiction career with Dreimeterdreißig, a love-and-loss story set in a Viennese altbau, where the 3.30-metre ceilings become silent witnesses. The debut quickly climbed into the top 10 of Austria’s national fiction bestseller list.

Sellerie Studio’s cover artwork showcases two phospho typefaces: the title stretches along a spiralling paper ribbon in the reversed-stress sans Antipol Variable, while the author’s name stands out in the warm italic serif Gyst. A pink-blue hourglass backs the paper ribbon which doubles as both measuring tape and falling sand. The cover fuses Vienna’s typical ceiling height (3.30 m) with the idea of slipping time to create an immediately legible image. Inside the book, playful Antipol headings are combined with Baskerville body text.

“Ukraine is like a prison you can’t get out of, and Kyiv is my cell. Only skateboarding allows me to escape.” This sentence, uttered in the summer of 2023 by twenty-five-year-old skateboarder Aleksandr Burchak, sums up the stagnation in which Ukrainian youth finds itself. Photographed with a silver camera from the 1990s (XPan), this work by Robin Tutenges reveals the dead time of a war that shattered Europe in the winter of 2022. It’s a step sideways, abandoning the litany of breaking news to show how the conflict reconfigures everyday life, right down to its most trivial aspects. Here, skateboarding is more than just an unusual way of talking about a brutally confiscated youth: the figures of these teenagers appear as an act of resistance and creativity in the face of the violence imposed by Russia. The panoramic format, similar to the dimensions of a skateboard, represents this reduced horizon, where the board is now the only opening: for the time of a few tricks, those who could be soldiers escape gravity. This photographic series was supported by the Centre national des arts plastiques ( Cnap), as part of the “Performance” national photographic commission.

This 100-copies self-published booklet, bound with two black staples, plays with the panoramic format, using multiple flaps and folds to accentuate the composition of the images. The title is set in Tempel Softland, the introduction in Minotaur Sans, and all other texts (captions, comments, imprint) in Yorick, using its Cyrillic characters. 32 pages and 36 fold-out flaps, 110×200 mm. Photographs by Robin Tutenges, editorial and graphic design by Théo Miller.

Booklet for the theatrical play Fantasmagoria IV, directed by acclaimed Brazilian director Felipe Hirsch. The play premiered in São Paulo in 2024 and reflects on many subjects surrounding linguistics and the meaning (or meaninglessness) of art itself.

Solfa is used for the titles, paired with Pollen for the texts.

Les Ateliers du Magnolia is a French artist residency based in Haute-Saône. It offers designers a creative space for the duration of a residency.

Duo Impair graphic design studio created the visual identity for the residency and is also developing it, for example with this exhibition booklet. It was printed for the first exhibition of Les Ateliers du Magnolia, hosted by ARCADE Design à la campagne.

The sans serif font is a custom font named Magnole. It was designed by Hadrien Tranchant from Duo Impair after a wood typeface found in a catalog issued by Manufacture de caractères en bois et de matériel d’imprimerie A. Martin et Cie, Ardon, Valais, Switzerland, around 1900. It’s paired with WS Kateka by WrittenShape.

Movie poster and credits designed by French team Atelier Pierre Pierre for Bsahtek, a short movie directed by Marc Thomas who describes his project as “a ballad from another time of young men in a hair salon in Paris. The story of a slice of suspended time spent before the mirror”.

Udada Festibala (“Summer Festival”) is an open festival that takes place over this weekend in Donibane Lohitzune, or Saint-Jean-de-Luz, in southwestern France. Organized by Collectif Moï Moï / kolektiboaren eskutik, it offers “live music, DJ sets, installations, food, wine, encounters and curiosities”.

This year’s identity was designed by Maison Solide, using Antoine Elsensohn’s EB Trainer Grotesk for the bilingual typography in Basque and French. Udada comments (translated):

For this second edition, we had no choice but to get back on track with Maison Solide, as last year’s show was a real blast, and we were delighted when these two creatures appeared before your very eyes! Perfectly in keeping with Udada’s image: organic, multiform, evolving and well mounted on hoof and heel!

One Sheet (27″×41″) poster for the theatrical release of Hello, Dolly!,

a musical romantic comedy film based on the 1964 Broadway production of the same name. Directed by Gene Kelly and written and produced by Ernest Lehman, the film stars Barbra Streisand, Walter Matthau, Michael Crawford, Danny Lockin, Tommy Tune, Fritz Feld, Marianne McAndrew, E. J. Peaker and Louis Armstrong.

Buffalo Expanded is used for the title, set on a circle with some skillful arching, fanning, and distorting. Originally drawn by Ed Benguiat for Photo-Lettering in 1964, this face was digitized by Donald Roos in 2004 and is available from House Industries. The names are set in Beton schmalfett (with its alternate R) and Venus schmalmager.

Desdemona Solid for the dust jackets of a series of books by British horticulturalist E.A. Bowles (1865–1964), covering the four seasons in three volumes. Originally published in 1914–1915, this edition is a reprint by David & Charles from 1972. While the interior (not shown) is a facsimile of the original, the jacket design uses Letraset’s early-1970s revival of Desdemona, with one word per line. The author’s name is in Berling Italic.
