Milton Glaser was a Lettera user. For this compilation with recordings of works by Beethoven, he* opted for Walter Haettenschweiler’s Strada. The bold condensed face with all weight allocated to the tops and bottoms was included in the third volume of the Swiss alphabet book series, published by Niggli in 1967. The massive overshoot in round letterforms (see “oven”) can be found back in the original.

*) That’s assuming Glaser handled the typography himself, in addition to providing the cover art. Maybe it was an uncredited typographer at Columbia Records.

The Moments was a soul vocal trio formed in Washington in the mid-1960s. Since 1978, the group is known as Ray, Goodman & Brown. On the cover of their album Look at Me from 1975, the band name is set in Pinto Flare, with several of its interlocking alternates. The title likewise is based on this 1970s biform design. It’s not typeset, but drawn, with wider proportions, a shiny texture and a three-dimensional effect that make the letterforms look as if they were made from gold bullions.

British designer John Pasche (then of Gull Graphics) did the sleeve design, and Dudley Thomas is credited with the front graphics.

This LP cover from 1975 includes a variety of themes from popular children’s television shows from the British Broadcasting Corporation. The BBC Records Discography Blog says:

Both sides of RESL 13 turned up on ‘Music From BBC Children’s Programmes’ (REH 214) in 1975. The six episodes of Moonbase 3 were only broadcast once on BBC at a time when most children were already abed, and it wasn’t aimed at them anyway, so this appears to be a fairly lazy bit of re-licensing by BBC Records. It doesn’t sit alongside Playschool and Chigley that comfortably. If you want copies of these tracks though it’s a better deal than buying the single. And, just maybe, the label were throwing a bone to DW fans who missed out on the small run of the single.

The album cover was really just a collection of TV show logos which serve as an eclectic sample of the logo design trends from 1975. The jumble is kept together by Embrionic Triline with hyperextended lines that form a border.

A very computeristic typeface for a book about automation. This is the same version of Gemini Computer or predecessor used for Pubblicità in Italia, 1964–1965. Among other differences from later versions are the ‘H’, ‘M’, ‘W’.

Arrival was first released in Sweden on October 11, 1976.

News Gothic is the main typeface used on the artwork for the albums and singles by Swedish pop group ABBA from 1976 to 1982. It is also the typeface used for the iconic logo with the backwards B. According to Wikipedia, it was –

[…] designed by Rune Soderqvist, who had designed ABBA’s record sleeves. The logo first appeared on the French compilation album, Golden Double Album, released in May, and would henceforth be used for all official releases.

But the idea for the official logo was made by the German photographer Wolfgang Heilemann on a “Dancing Queen” shoot for the teenage magazine Bravo. On the photo, the ABBA members held a giant initial letter of his/her name. After the pictures were made, Heilemann found out that one of the men held his letter backwards as in ᗅᗺᗷᗅ. They discussed it and the members of ABBA liked it.

For the albums Ring Ring, Waterloo, and ABBA, different fonts were used.

The first appearance of the ABBA logo was on the French Golden Double Album ‎(Melba, Vogue, May 1976). The secondary typeface is Windsor Elongated in all caps.
