The overall look of this shopfront gives off a 60/70s vibe, but the two typefaces do not date from the same period: The larger one in brown on yellow, Pretorian, was designed in the early 20th century. Its popularity in the late 70s and 80s is due to a faithful Letraset revival. The typeface on the windows, Mecanorma Poster, is really from the late 60s (and was popular in the 70s). The shop opened in 1980, so the signage is likely to be from that time.

Hauser Script was a Ludlow typeface designed in 1937 by George Hauser. Steve Jackaman of Red Rooster revived it for digital typesetting in 1998.

The primary typeface for this poster is Fanfare (Louis Oppenheim, 1927). Apparently, the designers of La Boca were unhappy with some of its capital letters, so they replaced them with shapes that are derived from the lowercase – see C, M, V and W. The script is Filmotype LaSalle, designed in 1952 by Ray Baker. Looking at a word like ‘Alida’ reveals that Filmotype’s official digitization (Patrick Griffin, Rebecca Alaccari, 2008) – the version that is used here – is superior to competing releases.

These labels on a circa 1955 cruet set include a hand lettered logo along with Kaufmann (AKA Swing) and Twentieth Century, Lanston Monotype’s copy of Futura by Sol Hess.

My friend is a physiotherapist contemplating opening up her own studio; yoga, pilates and so on. I couldn't wait to start thinking about this: naming, Logo, typoghraphy, stationary. Maybe one day something like this?
