Nike’s sponsorship of the Shanghai Marathon provides them a valuable opportunity to highlight their brand amongst the Chinese running community. We were asked to develop an aesthetic identity for the race that celebrated the city’s athletic heritage and could be deployed across high-profile and varied applications.

Alongside Nike's Brand Design team, we devised a visual identity that both reflected the competition's energy and maintained the flexibility to incorporate Western and Chinese scripts.

We commissioned and directed typographers Six Station and Ryu Mieno in the creation of a series of posters that would be displayed on billboards, banners and signs along the marathon route, as well as at the Marathon Expo and online.

Artist Sodavekt designed an accompanying pattern that incorporated elements of the city as well as running imagery, recasting road markings, wayfinding signs and Shanghai architecture in Nike’s iconic Volt colourway. In order to enable its use on different surfaces it can be cropped without compromising design.

This bespoke Shanghai imagery resulted in high levels of brand exposure and commercial activity during the race, and encouraged several hundred participants to sign up to Nike+ apps as a result

Photographer Klaus Pichler and journalist Clemens Marschall went on a mission to find, document and explore the last public refuges for a dying drinking generation. On countless wanderings through Vienna they found some of these places in their final throes. The book is a swan song for these bars that have shaped their customers’ existences for decades, places that are soon to disappear forever.

The book’s massive cardboard cover maintains the function of a front door into a parallel universe. The title was set using stick-on metal letters — which many bars of this kind use as toilet or kitchen door signs — complete with one letter accidentally mounted upside-down. We wanted the book to convey what you feel and smell inside the bars by using certain textures, aesthetics and surfaces. The sound of dense chatter is mirrored in the claustrophobic typography on the inner pages.

Bridge The Gap is the movement that brings all of the global urban running crews together under one roof. Formed by founding father Mike Saes (NYC Bridgerunners) and Charlie Dark (Run Dem Crew) Bridge The Gap connects the dots between running culture, lifestyle, music, art and creativity with events around the globe where crews come together to meet,run, create and party together.

The name Stride conveys confidence whilst portraying an accessible nature to the sometimes performance dominated world of running. The logo is based on the negative space of a running gait, evoking a sense of movement even when static. This concept flows through every aspect of the visual identity and store design, including the ‘Motion Wave’ ceiling design.

The logo for this Boston Public Library exhibition effectively references a scoreboard. Unfortunately they had to scale the ‘M’ to fit in the box. Could have gone with a monospaced face but the effect wouldn’t have been much different.

One of the treasures found in the depths of Gray-E was this vintage International Rectifier Corporation box with the contents (a 130V 75mA T065/075 selenium rectifier with mounting hardware) still in tact. I absolutely love the iconic logo and the use of the Hellenic Wide typeface on this packaging. Yes, junk geeks can also be type geeks.
