Fantastic use of Hoefler & Co. fonts in this new site for recording duo Palaxy Tracks.

The cover for trumpet player Till Brönner’s latest album as well as accompanying artwork uses not one, but two interesting fonts released in 2014: Lichtspiele by Stefan Hübsch, an eccentric display family inspired by marquee letters found on old cinemas, and Rukola, a joyful brush script that marks the debut of Czech designer Nikola Giacintová.

While the Neon cut of Lichtspiele has been used for the album cover, this web banner resorts to the simpler Lichtspiele Display. Note the peculiar umlaut, with the dots stacked in the counter.

Hey Studio’s branding work for the design and content agency Collective uses Domaine for the logotype (modified) and text settings and LL Brown for display settings. As with all of Hey’s work, it is clean, minimal and neo modernist.

Forager, designed by Topos Graphics and Flying Pyramids, is typeset in four different fonts: Poster Bodoni, Garamond, Rongel, and Futura.

The use of Poster Bodoni with Garamond are both references to The Macmillan Company’s 1942-published edition of The Birds of America — the wonderful and classic book by naturalist and painter John James Audubon. The Birds of America contains lusciously colored illustrations (or engraved plates) of a wide variety of birds in the United States. This particular edition uses Poster Bodoni as the typesetting of bird species names, with tracked out Garamond small caps as the ‘setting for those species’ scientific names.

With Forager, we set out to instruct the audience in a similar way to Audubon’s classic—designing the layout to mix full-page “plates” (in our case, photographs) with descriptive texts. Because of this formal, aesthetic, and historical influence, it seemed appropriate to use both of these typefaces for our display typesetting of Forager’s botanical plate names.

Rongel, released by Mario Feliciano in 2004, is an historical revival of a font in the style of Garamond — the latter of which is considered to be among the most legible and readable serif typefaces for use in print applications. While Garamond dates back to the 1560s, Rongel is based on Feliciano’s interpretation of Muestras de los punzones y matrices de letra que se funde en el obrador de la Imprenta Real, Madrid, published in 1799. Forager’s descriptive body copy texts are set in Rongel. This is to both read as somewhat nondescript yet classic and scientifically legible.

There is no special reason for use of Futura, save for its also being straightforward and workmanlike — a nice counter to the serifs used throughout the book.

Design Rehab and Markatos Moore created a classy, representative website for The Battery, an exclusive private social club in San Francisco. The elegant overall appearance is achieved by the main use of Benton Sans in combination with Benton Modern Display for headlines and links.

Marianina FY (a sans-serif family of 24 fonts) and Gauthier FY (a contemporary old-style serif typeface), co-created by Alisa Nowak & Jérémie Hornus on co-create.fontyou.com, the first collaborative type foundry.

Both are used on You Talking To Me, a webshop for letter objects designed by Le Goff & Gabarra.

Branding for Strietman, a design firm developing coffee-related products for the consumer market that excel in craftsmanship. The logotype is set in tracked out Verlag Condensed and printed with a PMS copper finish. All other typography is in Verlag of regular width. Except for running text, everything is in all caps. 

Freddie’s Deli is a deli based in Paris, France, created by Kristin Frederick. The logotype combines the shape of two sandwiches with the delicious and gorgeous Tartine Script.

The website to promote the opening of the new Students’ Union building of Manchester Metropolitan University has been designed by Evolutia, a Manchester-based creative internet consultancy.

The site is designed as a rich, interactive user-experience and uses Wolfgang Homola’s Soleil.

A limited edition of a 100% traditionally produced beer, this project had us researching Romanesque architecture and aesthetics inspired by the producer’s spirit.
Predominance of bay over stretch and the use of typographic references from that period,  captured with maximum austerity, were some of the features taken into account while carrying out this project.

Poster

Poster, flyer and banner for an exhibition about Swiss writer Max Frisch at Museum Strauhof, Zurich, on the occasion of the centennial of his birth. With the use of Times Modern in two shades, groenlandbasel pays homage to the iconic design by Willy Fleckhaus and Rolf Staudt for the suhrkamp taschenbuch series, in which many of Frisch’s works, including Homo Faber, were published.
