Damien (Revolver Type Foundry) is used alongside U8 (Fatype) in Koschke. This 152-page book was published by the German Film Critics’ Association on the occasion of the Woche der Kritik which took place during the Berlinale film festival in February 2018:

Berlin Critics’ Week was founded four years ago with the activist intent of casting a different light on film culture, of questioning the many routines of the “business” (our own included), of conceiving of criticism as action, as an endeavor that shouldn’t just observe from afar, but also create incentives. It’s in this spirit that the Critics’ Week 2018 has set out on a new initiative, publishing the first edition of a book to accompany the program.

Quotes are set in a bold weight of Damien Display. By activating the stylistic alternates for diamond-shaped dots and punctuation marks, the typeface’s sharp character is further emphasized.

The essays are set in Damien throughout. The contemporary serif typeface family is employed in several weights; for headings, body text, marginal notes, page numbers, and running heads.

Some of the large quotes in Damien Display use the U8 typeface for inline emphasis of single words. Here it is Style as defined by Charles Bukowski.

In this section, Damien Bold (heading) is paired with a very light weight of U8 (author’s name).

Damien has rather economical proportions, while U8 is wide. By pairing the two contrasting typefaces in a single line, the designers create an eye-catching, slightly disturbing effect.

German and English texts are set in the same cut of Damien. German-style (single) guillemets are also used for marking quotations in the English parts. Damien Light was chosen for footnotes.

In this composition, Damien and U8 take turns. The larger quotes are in the serif, the small ones in the sans.

The opening page for the appendix combines Damien Display Light for English with U8 Medium for German.

Invoice from a hauling company in Nürnberg-Erlenstegen, issued in July 1920 to Herrn Göselt, a local merchant (Kaufmann dahier) for carting six stere (Steer) of wood for Zeltner — possibly the local brewery of the same name?

The typography uses both weights of Mars, a so-called neudeutsche Schrift from the Jugendstil period that brings together elements of blackletter and roman type. Designed by Albert Auspurg, Mars and its bold companion were issued by the A.-G. für Schriftgießerei und Maschinenbau in Offenbach in 1906 and 1909, respectively.

In 1939, Georg Kalb had a tragic accident and crashed his wagon into the Pegnitz river. After his death, his brother — who, oddly enough, was named Georg as well — continued the hauling business. Georg Kalb (1870–1941), who may have been this brother or yet another family member with the same name, was the landlord of the Kalbsgarten. This popular countryside inn existed until 1969, see a picture from 1911 and the address on Google Street View.

WhoMadeWho is a Copenhagen-based experimental pop trio. For their album Through the Walls from 2017, Bureau Borsche and Céline Hurka designed a custom typeface in single weight. Named Whoceline Whoceline, the face serves as a red thread throughout the band’s visual communication, and carries a distinct personality that manages to leverage the album identity across multiple platforms and media. Trax is France’s leading magazine and website for electronic music and culture. Founded in Paris in 1997, Trax was historically intermingled with its subject (from the early days of the “French Touch” to later major acts), witnessing, recording, and surviving the dramatic changes of the music industry and the rise of electronic culture. In 2013, the magazine was eventually bought by its own employees. Trax turned 18 in 2015 and decided to reflect these changes with a new format.

Production Type’s Jean-Baptiste Levée, in collaboration with Large design studio, rethought the new Trax from the ground up. Starting from a new magazine format and art direction, and a new logo drawn by Levée (based on Stunt Nord, a standalone style of the Stunt family, to be released), the overhaul extended beyond the magazine to all aspects of the Trax brand, such as the website, events, and digital products.

The type palette provided by Production Type is a compound of existing off-the-shelf types, new extensions, and previously unseen designs. The main text typeface is Cardinal, a serifed alphabet drawn by Yoann Minet & Quentin Schmerber under Levée’s guidance. Cardinal refers to many classic Jannon-inspired typefaces that were popular in 1990s digital culture, and distantly echoes the ill-fated typeface ITC Garamond. In this way, Cardinal Photo and Cardinal Fruit are two extra sidekicks, reminiscent of an era where the early photocomposition faces were swapped with their electronic counterparts. Stratos, Minet’s own design, while being unreleased at the time, was featured in the layout since the first issue redesigned by the team. Minotaur Lombardic & Proto Slab debuted on the cover of Trax magazine (respectively on issues 185 & 190), too. Existing designs from the Production Type catalog were also put to use across all Trax channels: Minotaur, Minotaur Sans, Minotaur Beef, Countach, and Proto Grotesk, which gained newly drawn weights specifically for the brand.
