C.M.Eldershaw is a new sales and lettings agency offering a progressive, holistic approach to moving home or business. Polytechnic were commissioned to consult on creative strategy and design the brand identity, digital assets, website and printed matter.

The inclination for an uplifting and personal tone anchors the founder’s name in the identity and steps away from the anonymity of many existing estate agencies. There is a warmth in the curve to all of the Friz Quadrata letterforms. The specifically unusual glyphs such as the lower-case a, b, d, p and q with their open counters – and the many hooked serifs and swash-like uppercase letterforms, made this typeface highly recognisable and a strong choice for the logotype and headline face.

The characterful Agipo is used as the supporting typeface, with its splayed uppercase M and the round tittles. It echoes Friz just enough whilst clearly bringing a tidy secondary voice but with a strong contemporary voice.

The positive outlook and approach of the business is further reflected in a warm and energising colour palette. Colour foil used in combination with coloured papers makes for crisp communication, and a range of custom die-cut formats add interest to the printed matter.

Free Soul is a Japanese compilation series, published through different music companies. Compiled by Toru Hashimoto, this influential series introduced (mainly 1970s) soul, funk and jazz to young Japanese music fans in the 1990s. The album art was designed by Eisaku Ono, who also served as the art director Relax magazine in the 2000s.

Throughout the series, the cover would feature a cropped photograph of a woman's face, a big “free soul” logo, set in Stilla (François Boltana for Letraset, 1972) and a title set in Kuenstler Scrit Black or Eurostile.

Overlapping ITC Edwardian Script, the typography of indie rock? At least Mitski and Vampire Weekend think so. Both artists designed their own album covers using the typeface.

“Hopper creates the mood. The mood is Hopper.” Tony DiSpigna’s script lettering gets most of the attention here, but Gill Kayo is a great foil to those swashy curls.

The Hopper Paper Company was purchased by Georgia-Pacific in 1963. The brand name was kept until at least 1993, but there is no reference to it on the GP website today.

What a weird ampersand! Pretty eccentric, considering that it is quite a crucial glyph in a wedding script. This is Flemish Script (from Bitstream), spotted at Laib & Liebe, a deli/coffee bar in Hamburg-Altona. The ampersand has been tamed down in Monotype’s Flemish Script II.
