The Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University is a museum of trees teaching the world about plants. Their new website uses various fonts, including Editorial New for the titles, Lausanne for the body text, and Yorick for the notes.

Sesc Paraty creates a platform for videos of concerts, workshops and literature with local artists from the city. A visual identity graphically translates the culture of the city of Paraty, through nuclei, shapes, illustrations paired with Verlag, picked because it is light and brings good readability to the screen.

L’ADN Tendances (“Trends”) is an annual magazine that reports on innovation, trends and anticipations. Art direction and editorial design of L’ADN Tendances and N°21 by Violaine & Jérémy. Cover artwork by Daniel Schweizer, set design by Jonathan Bréchignac.

The L'ADN logotype is set in Cako Black. The magazine layout uses Cako, (modified) Druk Condensed, ABC Ginto Nord Black, and GT Pressura Mono for headlines. Body text is set in Stanley and Kobe, with highlights in Canela.

Elaine Lustig Cohen designed several book jackets for Meridian Books, as well as other collateral, such as this moving notice. Like her first husband, Alvin Lustig, who passed away in 1955, she favored strong, modernist concepts. Elaine’s work, however, often used type as illustration. Here, a stencilized Volta acts as a train.

Letterform Archive holds a large collection of Lustig Cohen’s work, much of which can be seen in an article by Florence Fu and in Letterform’s Online Archive.

de Val is a mix of ambient music by Nina, released by Paralaxe Editions on cassette tape. The covers are letterpress-printed from hand-set type. They were designed (without any computers) by Oficina de disseny and printed at L’Automàtica.

The large condensed type, made from synthetic plastic, is Folio Bold Extra Condensed. It was almost certainly produced at Neufville in Barcelona where they made and sold plastic poster type – including some Bauer typefaces like Folio. The medium-sized “de Val” on the front of the cover is set in Venus ancha (Venus Extended) and the smaller type on the back is Venus fina (Venus Light).

The type on the cassette itself is rotogravure-printed Akzidenz-Grotesk.

Side note: Before finally confirming the identity of the large plastic type, I consulted with Dafi Kühne, Florian Hardwig, Indra Kupferschmid, Oficina de disseny, and a late-letterpress-era Neufville brochure scan from Hans Reichardt that specifically promotes Folio Extra Condensed as plastic poster type. This is a classic example of type identification research where the actual solution is almost inconsequential, but the effort is still totally worth it because of all the stuff I learned (or was reminded of) along the way. Thanks to everyone for indulging my curiosity!

Cera Pro is the brand and user interface font of Blinkist. The Berlin based startup squeezes non-fiction books in text and audio that can be read or listened to within about 15 minutes.
It remains to be seen whether the depth of the non-fiction books — either read and heard on a smartphone, tablet or computer — can be compressed this much without losing essential content. However, FF Tisa, which is used in the continuous text, reads well in any case. Everything else is set in the Cera Pro — headlines, short info texts as well as the complete user interface.

Juice Society is a small-batch juicer in Austin, TX, with one juice bar location and shelf presence in select local cafes, hotels, and grocers. Their packaging […] presents the juice varieties in a crisp, fun, and elegant way — even a little scientific-looking with the iconography above the name of each juice. It also pulls off nicely the use of three different sans serifs — a condensed one for the logo, a Humanist for the names, and a monospace for the ingredients. The winking happy face is a fun accent to the identity.

Motel is a Berlin-based craft brewery. Taking inspiration from the atmosphere of motels and vintage travel ads, each beer has a motel name, like for instance ‘Motel Shady Pines’, ‘Motel Golden Lake’ and so on with matching illustrations.

The typography uses two filled-in styles of Frontage Condensed, a decorative and layered all caps typeface by Juri Zaech. It is paired with Freight Micro throughout their identity.

With an established reputation in the American market, Blue Apron Inc. is a grocery delivery service that brings recipes and their ingredients right to the doorstep.

Ever since the 2017 redesign, Cera Pro is the typographic backbone of Blue Apron’s identity. Whether it’s the boxes that ship the ingredients, the recipes that help you make your meal, or the website that can sort you out with the cooking tools you need, the simple geometry and warmth of Cera Pro is up to scratch. It is accompanied by Signika for the logo and a few other secondary seriffed faces used on packaging and printed matter.

Ulf Schneider is an agile coach and a software developer from Germany. On his clean and simple personal website he uses Input Sans exclusively.
