Brewgooder—

In early 2016 we set out on a simple mission - to provide clean water for 1,000,000 people through the power of craft beer by donating 100% of our profits to clean water charities.

For a campaign advertising their Clean Water Lager, Brewgooder sprayed graffiti using a stencilled version of Elephant Black on the walls and pavements of Glasgow and Edinburgh. However, they sprayed with water, not paint.

The Brewgooder Global Gathering was a collaborative campaign to work with hundreds of brewers over the World Water Day weekend of 20-22nd March 2020. Brewgooder asked brewers ‘to represent their States, cities and neighbourhoods, brew a unique beer, launch it all together on 20 March 2020 and raise £500 or more each for Brewgooder Foundation rehabilitation and construction projects across Malawi that we hope will empower the lives of 100,000 people in 2020/21.’

Comedy Feast is a new roaming family festival combining three of life’s greatest pleasures — food, drink and laughter. For the launch of the pilot experience at Lincolnshire Castle, Only were commissioned to create a simple brand identity that would inspire audiences to engage with the experience. Over time, the identity would need to flex to accommodate new locations spanning the length and breadth of the UK.

The identity is set in a bespoke version of Krana Fat by Schick Toikka. The typeface was chosen for its flamboyant and unexpected character. A playful graphic line device mischievously intersects with the typography across applications.

The Not Very Exclusive Sale is a project made at Leeds Beckett University where I produced a experimental typographic publication on the occasion of Buy Nothing Day, inspired by consumerist advertisement to provoke thought and reaction from the viewer.

Slingshot offers “Bottled Cold Brew Coffee and Cascara Tea Handcrafted in Raleigh, N.C.” The branding featuring Bickham Script with a swash underline was designed in 2012 by Good South (then still known as The Dapper Paper Co.). “Slingshot” is set in Raleigh Gothic, obliqued on an angled baseline. Imperfect is a community restaurant that was created with the aim of helping people at risk of social exclusion to reintegrate into society, by offering personal help and training in catering. It is a local project that aims to serve the community and focuses on reintegrating people into society and work. The brand essence, ‘we love imperfection’, speaks of giving a second chance – it has an impact on everyone who goes through the programme and they clearly learn that although we are all imperfect, we are all useful and valuable.

Sr. y Sra. Wilson created the brand strategy and identity and were in charge of the naming and the design of coordinated elements in the restaurant, as well as the signage. We also helped to design some of the spaces in the restaurant.

We wanted to use design to communicate the message and values of Imperfect, and to help to promote a social project that has an impact on people – on those who take part in this social programme and also on the customers, as they are invited to reflect on and identify with the project when they come to the restaurant.

To develop the branding we drew on the philosophy of the Japanese technique of ‘kintsugi’, which views breakage and repair as part of the history of an object that should be displayed instead of disguised, as this history and transformation makes the object even more beautiful. Imperfect is ‘kintsugi’ applied to people.

We created an identity based on direct messages to users, to raise awareness of how ‘we love imperfection’, to highlight that imperfection can be useful and reused.

Using the aesthetic notion of ‘wabi-sabi’, a Japanese term that highlights ‘the beauty of imperfection’ and that is presented as elements with a natural or rustic look, or elements from nature, we wanted to give all the designed elements a warm composition, with materials that resembled nature, like recycled paper. The identity had to be produced at a low cost, and to reduce the cost of the production of the printed elements we worked with Fedrigoni and Manter.

Imperfect is a clear example of design for good. Using design combined with a low-cost production, we can create the ideal atmosphere that helps to improve society.

Culprit is a bar and restaurant located on Auckland’s Wyndham Street. It has a menu made from ingredients supplied by local New Zealand producers, growers and farmers, and is inspired founder’s Kyle Street & Jordan MacDonald’s travels across the United States and Europe.

Culprit has a modern interior design in a converted loft space created by Kirsty Mitchell. This is characterised by large exposed beams and brick walls, solid wood tables and strip lights suspended from the ceiling and mounted, at irregular angles, on walls.

Culprit’s brand identity, created by Studio South, is described as being dark and moody. This intended to visually articulate something of the restaurant’s menu, service, which sees diners presented with trays and trolleys, and as a way to compliment Kirsty Mitchell’s interior design. Menus, beer taps, posters and signage are linked by distinctive colour palette, geomtric shapes and a consistent use of Aktiv Grotesk Extra Bold.

Danish Selection is a new range of high-quality fruit spreads cut with alcohol. The range includes blackcurrant infused with Jamaican rum, orange with cognac and a wild blueberry variety with Scotch whiskey. Orkla, the company behind Danish Selection, worked with Copenhagen based graphic design studio Kontrapunkt to develop a packaging treatment that would clearly communicate this new concept to consumers. Kontrapunkt’s solution is characterised by a circular label of Knockout and Brandon Grotesque, pastel colour and uncoated paper.
