The luxurious The Franklin Hotel in the heart of downtown Chapel Hill, North Carolina, is presented on a single page website where Miller Banner is used for quotations and headlines as well as Courier New for text passages.

The website for German graphic designer Jens Windolf has a minimal approach and accentuates the use of typography.

Antagónica is a biannual publication that intends to reflect on the information that is given to us and establish a tool that allows us to know all points of view so we can get a proper conclusion. Its main feature is that it is a reversible book and it can be read in both directions. The first volume is about the Nobel Peace Prize of the new Millennium.

“Kinfolk is a slow lifestyle magazine published by Ouur that explores ways for readers to simplify their lives, cultivate community and spend more time with their friends and family”.* Stephen Coles identified the typeface for the title, “Optimus Priceps, a kind of messy Trajan by Manfred Klein” [See the detail below]. These roughened letters inspire thoughts of whittled branches or the uneveness of a handcraft. The body text is Adobe Caslon. The breathy use of whitespace and letterspacing recall a lot of contemporary Japanese design (often set in Garamond). The Kinfolk magazine, cookbook and website all have a slightly different palette of type, but maintain a similar feeling across mediums. The clarity and warmth of the type as it is used here compliments the associations the brand promotes, which all boil down to a clear set of values. This is a book not just for cooking, but a place to find lifestyle recipes.

“Saturdays Surf NYC is a downtown Manhattan surf lifestyle brand. Since opening in 2009, Saturdays has cultivated an iconic mix of surf lifestyle, menswear, art, and coffee. Like the brand itself, the magazine explores the interplay between NYC lifestyle and surfing. This duality threads throughout the first and second issues—from the balanced blocks of color on the cover to the layout and editorial content: half interviews and half photographic essays.” — Jevas Lehn Studio

For the big type on opening spreads and pull quotes, the designers used Miller Banner — the largest of Matthew Carter’s Miller series — to full effect. These delicate and graceful shapes contrast with stark numerals in Memphis.

Dummy is an “indepent society magazine” from Berlin, Germany. Each issue is devoted to a single theme. These images are from issue 42 “Verlierer” (“Losers”). The combination of typefaces and the layout is different in each issue.

The dedicated website Paul-Rand.com is a tribute and online archive to Paul Rand’s life and professional achievements. Graphic designer Daniel Lewandowski combined URW Franklin Gothic, Abril Display and Abril Text for this neat and elegant example of responsive design.

Striking visual identity for the Camerata de Lausanne, a string ensemble of international classical musicians founded by Pierre Amoyal in 2002. Art director Demian Conrad writes:

How can something invisible, like music, be graphically portrayed? […] For the Camerata de Lausanne, I looked for a way of visualising sound, but without using images from the world of music per se (notes, instruments, etc).

My research led me to the work of Ernst Chladni, a German physicist and the father of modern acoustics. Chladni had discovered that by taking a copper disc sprinkled with sand and rubbing it with a bow, he could obtain geometrical figures. This fact demonstrates that music also has a physical effect on matter. So I followed the geometrical thread discovered by Chladni and used it on all communication media for the Camerata de Lausanne. To give it a more contemporary feel and make it more manageable, I had software written by Mathieu Rudaz which allows us to generate images directly on the computer using a specific frequency.

[…] I chose a very modernist and minimalist font, Neutraface. The geometrical architecture of this font contains echoes of mathematics, a discipline beloved by classical composers. In addition, we asked the typographer Emmanuel Rey to personalise the geometry of the logo by refining its micro-definition. The content is processed with the Plantin font of the printer Christophe Plantin.
